Providing long-term insurance for patients

Báo Kinh tế và Đô thịBáo Kinh tế và Đô thị20/10/2024

The doctor will assess the patient's condition and decide when to prescribe and dispense appropriate medication to the patient.

This is welcome information for many people, because those who have to go for monthly check-ups will see how meaningful this is.

An anonymous patient said: “I have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol… When I went to the hospital for health insurance check-ups, in the first few months I often had my blood pressure measured, blood tests done, and electrocardiograms taken… But in the following months, I mainly received medicine. But because there were so many patients, I had to line up to get a number from the morning, and sometimes it was my turn in the afternoon, which was very tiring…”.

This is a common situation for many people who go to see a doctor with health insurance. Many people say that there is no reason to go to the doctor, the doctor just asks a few questions, then opens the computer to look at the prescription and prescribes the same medicine but still has to come regularly.

Extending the time to dispense medicine will also reduce the load in many hospitals, simply because each examination session will reduce the number of people waiting for examination by half, or even two-thirds.

It is worth mentioning that the above proposal was supposed to be piloted in some hospitals in Hanoi from the beginning of October this year. The hospitals will pilot for 6 months, after which the Ministry of Health will evaluate, summarize and include it in the Circular amending and supplementing the Circular regulating the prescription of pharmaceutical drugs and biological products in outpatient treatment in an appropriate manner. However, the hospitals are still waiting for new decisions and instructions from the Ministry of Health so they have not been able to pilot.

After all, patients have insurance benefits, including health insurance, due to their own financial contributions.

Therefore, insurance policies, in addition to ensuring that the fund is not exploited, need to aim at the benefit of the patient. Finding ways to make it easier for patients to receive benefits (with treatment drugs) is something that needs to be thought about, because the pain of going to insurance clinics has been mentioned a lot in the press. Extending the time of dispensing drugs from 1 month to 3 months when chronic diseases have been treated stably is something that should be implemented as soon as possible.

What is not to worry about the effectiveness of treatment is: the duration of the drug prescription depends on the decision of the treating physician. The doctor himself with the new regulation of extending the drug prescription date will have the final say, in accordance with the examination and treatment process, further enhancing the responsibility of the treating physician.

Health insurance is one of the best policies of our country. This policy must be more and more widely covered, reaching all classes of people. Therefore, we need to make it more necessary for people, including reducing unnecessary time for medical examination and waiting.
