On March 27, news from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Minh Thuong District ( Kien Giang ) said that in recent days, drought has caused bridges and roads in the dike area of this district to collapse and crack, making travel difficult for people.

Specifically, in An Minh Bac commune, there are currently 53 landslides with a length of more than 3,200 m; Minh Thuan commune has 21 landslides with a length of 451 m.

A rural road section in Minh Thuong district collapsed.

According to statistics, since the beginning of the year, Minh Thuong District has recorded more than 3,700 meters of landslides and at risk of landslides, affecting a number of people's and state's properties.

The prolonged heat has caused the water level in the canal to drop, causing some dikes in the U Minh Thuong buffer zone to collapse. In the area of Canal 19 (An Thanh hamlet, An Minh Bac commune), every few dozen meters there are cracks on the concrete road surface, the canal bed is dry. The bridge over the canal collapsed, making it very difficult for people to travel, trade, and consume agricultural products.

Mr. Huynh Thanh Tuan, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Minh Thuong District, said that the district has directed communes and some specialized sectors to put up warning lights in areas where there are landslides and subsidence to inform people; and to paint the road in areas at risk of cracking to avoid traffic accidents.

According to forecasts, the dry season of 2023 - 2024 will come early and the salinity will be higher than the average of many years; the rain will come late and the rainfall will be lower than the average of many years, the possibility of a shortage of fresh water is very high. Right from the beginning of the year, HU Minh Thuong has directed the specialized sector to advise on the issuance of documents: schedule for closing sluice gates, building dams to prevent salinity in the buffer zone; solutions to prevent landslides; ensuring water sources for agricultural production and people's lives... However, the very large production area, the high demand for fresh water for irrigation causes the water level of the canals in the dyke to drop rapidly, combined with prolonged heat causing dryness and shallow surface water on the canals, leading to landslides.
