Prompt response in an emergency can literally save lives. When witnessing a loved one or someone suddenly collapse, people should pay attention to the following instructions:
Ensure safety
The first thing to do is to assess the surrounding environment to determine if there are any dangers, such as electrical leaks, fire, active traffic, sharp objects or toxic substances, according to the health website Medical News Today (UK).
If the area is not safe, people should not rush to approach the victim until the danger is eliminated or adequate measures have been taken to ensure their own safety. Otherwise, we may become the second victim or make the situation more complicated.
Proper first aid will help increase the victim's chances of survival.

Check the victim's reaction
After ensuring a safe environment, the next step is to check if the person has any response. Call out their name, shake their shoulder, or ask if they are okay. If they respond and are still conscious, continue asking how they are feeling and if anyone has called an ambulance. If they are unresponsive, not speaking, not moving, consider this a serious sign and need to proceed with the next steps.
Call an ambulance and get help
If the victim is unresponsive or if a heart attack or respiratory arrest is suspected, call an ambulance immediately. If there is another person nearby, one person calls an ambulance while the other begins first aid.
Check breathing and circulation
With the victim lying down, if there is no neck or back injury, gently tilt the head back and lift the chin to open the airway. Check for objects stuck in the mouth or throat, such as food, vomit, or foreign objects. If possible, gently remove them.
After opening the airway, observe whether the victim is breathing normally and whether the chest rises and falls. In addition, the victim's pulse should be checked, and the face and lips should be observed for bluish discoloration, profuse sweating, or coldness. If there is no pulse or signs of circulatory arrest, cardiopulmonary resuscitation should be performed.
Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation
If the victim is unresponsive, not breathing normally, or has no pulse, begin CPR immediately. Compress the chest hard and fast (about 100-120 times/minute), about 5-6 cm deep in adults, allowing the chest to return to its original position between compressions.
If you are trained and willing, perform CPR, giving two rescue breaths for every 30 chest compressions. If you are not trained, just do chest compressions until emergency help arrives, according to Medical News Today .
