In mid-November 2024, we had the opportunity to visit the orange growing model of Mr. Nguyen Van An's family in Dong Quan village with Bang Mac commune officials. While busy taking care of and making trellises to fix the fruit-laden branches, Mr. An shared: Through market research, I realized that oranges are a tree with high economic value. In 2019, I invested in planting about 2,500 orange trees (more than 2 hectares). Currently, on average, my family harvests about 50 tons of fruit each year, with selling prices ranging from 40,000 - 65,000 VND/kg (depending on the time and quality of the fruit), bringing the family a revenue of over 2 billion VND/year.
From the model, Mr. An's family has increased their income, become rich legitimately and contributed to creating seasonal jobs for about 30 local workers with an income of 250,000 VND/person/day.
Similar to Mr. An's family, Ms. Trieu Thi Lan's family in Don Xa village, Hoa Binh commune also developed a model of growing tangerine trees. Ms. Lan shared: In 2022, realizing that the tangerine growing model of some households in the commune and neighboring communes brought high economic efficiency, my family decided to invest and buy more than 500 trees to plant. This is a type of tree that requires growers to spend a lot of time taking care of, regularly watering to create humidity, fertilizing and clearing around the base. This year, my family's tangerine tree gave its first harvest, with an estimated yield of about 10 tons. Currently preparing to enter the main harvest season, my family has sold more than 100 kg of fruit, at a selling price of 65,000 VND/kg.
The district has a policy of developing citrus fruit growing models to restructure crops in the area. In fact, the model of growing orange trees has initially brought high economic efficiency to people in some communes.
Mr. Luong Thanh Chung, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Chi Lang district
Mr. Vi Van Huy, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoa Binh Commune, said: The model of growing oranges has been developed in the commune since 2020. Currently, the whole commune has 24 households growing with an area of nearly 28 hectares. To support people in developing the model, every year, the People's Committee of the commune coordinates with relevant units to open 2-3 training classes, transferring science and technology on growing fruit trees (including oranges) to people. In addition, the commune government pays attention to and creates conditions for people to access preferential loans to develop the model.
Accordingly, currently, in the commune, there are 2 households that have been able to borrow capital according to Resolution 08 dated December 10, 2019 of the Provincial People's Council on special policies to encourage investment, develop cooperation, link production and consumption of agricultural and rural products in the province in the period 2020 - 2025, with a total capital of 350 million VND to develop the cultivation of oranges.
Not only the two communes mentioned above, the model of growing tangerines is also developed in some communes in Chi Lang district. Specifically, the whole district currently has nearly 60 hectares of tangerines, of which about 50 hectares are for harvest, with more than 50 households growing, mainly concentrated in the communes: Hoa Binh, Bang Mac, Van Linh, Gia Loc. The total output of tangerines harvested in the whole district is about 1,000 tons/year, with an economic value of over 50 billion VND. From the model, households have an income of 200 to 500 million VND/year (after deducting expenses), some households earn from 2 billion VND/year or more. This is also one of the two districts (along with Bac Son district) with the largest area of growing tangerines in the province.
Mr. Luong Thanh Chung, Head of the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: The district has a policy of developing citrus fruit growing models to restructure crops in the area. In fact, the model of growing orange trees has initially brought high economic efficiency to people in some communes. In the coming time, the department will continue to coordinate with the authorities of communes with suitable natural conditions to promote and encourage people to develop and expand the model; organize training courses to transfer science and technology on the process of planting and caring for trees to people... contributing to helping people improve the productivity, quality and economic efficiency of crops.
