Beauty contests first appeared in Vietnam in the late 1980s. Up to now, there have been many beauty contests organized. Some people estimate that, at present, Vietnam has about 60 beauty contests each year.
This makes netizens humorous when they comment that no matter who you are, how old you are, or what your profession is, you have the opportunity to become a beauty queen. As long as you are healthy and confident, sooner or later the halo will shine on your life.

Journalist and poet Duong Ky Anh - the "father" of the Miss Vietnam pageant shared with VTC News that the purpose of beauty pageants is to honor beauty. But today, many pageants are organized for many different purposes and beauty is not the top priority.
"The purpose of most beauty pageants today is showing signs of commercialization. In my time, the most important purpose of beauty pageants was to honor beauty and guide the beauty of youth. Why is there such a thing as commercializing people? When people say that beauty pageants are for money, they are devaluing women and prestigious pageants. In our time, there was no such thinking. Many pageants even spent billions of dollars to organize but did not make a single penny in profit.
"I completely disagree and am very sad about the current commercialization of competitions," Mr. Duong Ky Anh shared.
