Teacher policy is not just about money

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên10/10/2024

The noisy proposal to exempt tuition fees for teachers' children, although teachers do not "expect anything", but the public's criticism has made many teachers worried. Of course, they hope to have a living income, commensurate with the nature of their profession, but most of them do not demand or want to have special preferential policies.

Ms. Nhu Huong, a high school English teacher who recently received her retirement decision, shared that when deciding to study pedagogy, graduate and become a teacher and stick with the profession until retirement, pursuing a rich life is certainly not the criteria of a teacher.

In fact, although they have not yet enjoyed the "highest salary" policy, teachers' income has gradually improved. However, the "wave" of teachers quitting their jobs and changing jobs has never been as alarming as in recent years. The first reason that the public thinks of is salary, but many studies have shown that income is only one of the reasons why teachers decide to leave the podium. What worries them most is the invisible pressure, the pressure that is not based on expertise. Teachers have to endure all the pressure from the state management mechanism, in teaching and learning, in relationships... Terrible indicators of achievement disease, the rate of good and excellent students, the number of students passing, the rate of student attendance...

There is also the pressure of having to struggle to "get into the payroll" and then continue to endure many unreasonable regulations to avoid falling into the 10% annual payroll streamlining (according to regulations).

Dr. Nguyen Quoc Viet, a teaching and research expert on public policy, asserted that teachers have the right to demand income commensurate with the nature of their profession; but if they only think about money, with such a level of training, they have more opportunities to earn money. He said that whether teachers are on the payroll or only sign contracts with teachers, there must be mechanisms to protect teachers, in both the public and private sectors. We cannot just push teachers into "danger" because of public pressure or because we want to please parents and students.

The issue of reducing unnecessary pressure on teachers has been mentioned many times, and many Ministers of Education and Training have wanted to resolve it but have not succeeded. Minister Nguyen Kim Son, when he first took on the task of "industry commander", also promised that the Ministry would have to consider adjusting and reviewing teaching and learning content, teaching practical and practical things, reducing and eventually eliminating formalities, frivolities, and uselessness...

The Ministry of Education and Training is making efforts to explain the necessity of developing and promulgating the Law on Teachers. What society needs and what teachers expect are not small, temporary policies, but a legal document that ensures universality and longevity. When teachers have their own law, their rights and responsibilities are commensurate with their position and the characteristics of their profession; they are no longer subject to the extra-professional pressures that each locality and each school has imposed on teachers as they have been doing for a long time.
