The old woman with hemiplegia and the old man with trembling hands make handicrafts to support people in flood-affected areas.

With trembling hands and half-paralyzed body, Mrs. Ngo Nga Kieu still tried to weave bamboo loops, completing the final steps of making a conical hat.

Every day after lunch, Mrs. Kieu and other elderly men and women in the Binh My Nursing System (Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City) make handicrafts such as hairpins, conical hats, cloth bags, seashell paintings, etc.

Ms. Kieu confided that these items will be sold at the nursing home on October 1 - International Day of the Elderly - and then transferred directly to the account of the Vietnam Fatherland Front to support people to overcome the effects of storms and floods.

"Even though we are old and our health is not as good as before, we still want to contribute a little bit to help our fellow countrymen recover from the storm and flood. Looking at the images of many people losing everything in a split second, I couldn't help but feel that I am still much luckier than them," Ms. Kieu said emotionally.

With trembling hands, Mrs. Kieu spends an hour knitting a conical hat or painting a cloth bag. Sometimes, Mrs. Kieu suddenly forgets what she is doing, then smiles brightly, signaling that she is very happy to suddenly remember this meaningful activity.

Sometimes he remembers, sometimes he forgets, but Mr. Nguyen Van Tri (81 years old) always sheds tears when he recalls the images of people in the flood-affected areas suffering much pain and loss when storm No. 3 passed.

"I sit here, eat well, sleep well, and wake up with someone to take care of me. Meanwhile, my fellow countrymen out there have to suffer a lot and lose a lot because of storms and floods. I feel very sorry for them. I hope that my little effort can help them overcome this difficult time," Mr. Tri confided.

Mr. Tri was assigned to make bracelets, but out of 10, he could only make one successfully because of his hand tremors. However, the old man never thought of giving up. Every day, Mr. Tri was excited, quickly eating lunch to join the others.

At the ceremony to celebrate October 1st - International Day of the Elderly - more than 500 products made by the elderly at 4 facilities of Binh My Nursing System were sold to participants and their relatives. All cash sold on the day of the event will be transferred to the account of the Vietnam Fatherland Front.

Present at the program early, Ms. Hien Luong, a relative of an elderly person being cared for here, shared that she felt very touched by the kindness of the elderly at the nursing home. Therefore, she bought a conical hat to support, transferring money directly to the QR code of the account number of the Vietnam Fatherland Front. Although the item was only worth a few tens of thousands of VND, Ms. Luong still decided to transfer 100,000 VND to support.

"Although their health is not as good as before, the products they make are very beautiful and meaningful," said Ms. Hien Luong.

According to Mr. Bui Anh Trung, founder of Binh My Nursing Home System, most of the elderly in nursing homes suffer from dementia or health problems. Therefore, the process of making handmade products encounters many difficulties.

The activity has created many beautiful memories, helping the elderly to be happier because they can contribute a little effort to society.

"The biggest pain of the elderly when they get old is feeling that they are no longer useful to society. Therefore, this activity not only contributes a small part in helping people in the Northern region overcome the consequences of storms and floods, but also helps the elderly affirm their own value," said Mr. Trung.
