(CLO) At least 24 people were killed and more than 40 injured in a bombing at a train station in Quetta, southwest Pakistan on November 9.

Balochistan province's Inspector General of Police, Mouzzam Jah Ansari, said 24 people were killed in the bomb blast at the railway station, which is usually busy early in the day. "The target was soldiers from the Infantry School," he said, adding that many of the wounded were in a critical condition.

"So far 44 injured people have been brought to the civil hospital," said Wasim Baig, a hospital spokesman.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Senior Superintendent of Police Operations Muhammad Baloch said it appeared to be a suicide bombing and an investigation was underway to find out more information. "The blast occurred inside the railway station when the Peshawar-bound express train was about to depart for its destination," Baloch said.

Pakistan is grappling with a wave of attacks by ethnic separatist militants in the southern province of Balochistan and Islamist militants in the northwest. The decades-long insurgency has destabilized Balochistan, creating security concerns for the province’s untapped resource projects.

The BLA rebels are fighting for independence for Balochistan, a province of about 15 million people that borders Afghanistan to the north and Iran to the west. The BLA is the largest of several ethnic groups fighting the government.
