Busting a 10 billion VND online football betting ring

On June 29, Thanh Khe District Police temporarily detained 6 suspects including: Duong Thoa (45 years old), Ha Van Thao, Hoang Thanh Luc (both 46 years old, both living in Thanh Khe District), Hoang Khanh (48 years old, living in Ngu Hanh Son District), Bui Van Tuan (52 years old, living in Hai Chau District), Nguyen Van Phap (41 years old, living in Lien Chieu District, both living in Da Nang City) to expand the investigation of the football betting ring.

Lieutenant Colonel Phan Van Thuong, Chief of Thanh Khe District Police, said that, predicting that gambling crimes in the form of football betting will take advantage of Euro 2024 to operate, the District Police have directed the Criminal Police Team to strengthen the management of the area and grasp the activities of the suspects.

On June 10, the District Police Department assigned the Criminal Police Team to set up a special investigation project codenamed VA0624T to concentrate forces and apply synchronous professional measures, thereby consolidating evidence about the role of the suspects.

The leader of the football betting ring is Duong Thoa. The network operates in a complex manner, spanning many districts and counties with dozens of assistants.

The agreement assigned Hoang Khanh to contact Hien (unknown background) to get a football betting account from the bookie with a limit of 15,000 points, the conversion rate of 1 point is equivalent to 14,000 VND. The agreement divided this account among the sub-dealers such as Thao, Luc, and Phap with an conversion rate of 20,000 VND/point.

After that, Khanh continued to take from Hien another football betting account with a limit of 40,000 points. For this account, Khanh divided it into 4 subordinate accounts.

Khanh continued to take 2 betting accounts from Bui Van Tuan to give to Duc to use with a limit of 1,000 points, at an agreement of 20,000 VND/point.

On June 27, the working groups simultaneously arrested 6 key suspects of the above gambling organization group.

The evidence and records include about 1,000 pages of documents, with an estimated amount of football betting in the past month alone being about 10 billion VND. The authorities also temporarily seized exhibits including 3,900 USD, 94 million VND and 5 mobile phones.
