Director of 'Dunes of Sand' passes away

The first director to adapt Frank Herbert's 'Dunes' - David Lynch - has just passed away. He is considered a legendary name and this is a great loss for world cinema.

The reason behind it was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease due to continuous smoking for many years. The Sand Dune filmmaker was 78 years old.

Sharing on the late director's Facebook page, the family said: "We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our father, husband, grandfather and artist David Lynch. We would like some privacy at this time. With his passing, there will be a big void in this world . But, as he always said, 'See the positive in the negative', today is a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies...".

According to critics, no one who has seen Lynch's work could mistake it for anyone else's. Unlike other leading directors, he does not belong to a movement or be defined by a particular genre.

With his diverse directing, many publications and associations have included his films in their lists of the most important cinema works of the last century. Specifically, in a 2012 poll of nearly 900 experts, Sight & Sound magazine ranked Mulholland Drive (2001) at number 28 while Blue Velvet (1986) was at number 69.

However, there is a significant paradox between Lynch's international status and his domestic reputation, with none of his films being included in the American Film Institute's most recent list of the 100 greatest films of all time, published in 2007.

The Academy hasn't always been kind to him. He was nominated for four Oscars as a director for Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and The Elephant Man (including adapted screenplay) but didn't win any. In 2019, he finally received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the organization.

Like the only modern American filmmaker who ranks higher than him on Sight & Sound 's list, Francis Ford Coppola ( Apocalypse Now is No. 14 while The Godfather is No. 21), Lynch is a rare case in Hollywood: an artist who eventually turned his back on the art form he mastered, leading to late films like Inland Empire (2006), Showtime (2017), etc., which were not very successful.

In 2017, he caught the world's attention with the 17-minute film What Did Jack Do?, in which he played a detective interrogating a monkey. Yet it's not hard to see how the effort felt more like a prank than an artistic statement.

Another brand that is also associated with his name is the first version of Dune. When the work was just released, he protested the cutting of the film, calling it "horrible" and "disastrous" after a year and a half of production in Mexico.

This is also the reason why the work was "ignored" by critics when it was released in 1984 and threatened to end Lynch's illustrious career. However, fortunately, Blue Velevet came and made a brilliant mark in his life.
