Understanding the harmful effects of tobacco on workers' health as well as the working environment, affecting work quality and efficiency, in recent times, Phu Tho Power Company has strengthened propaganda activities among all staff, employees and workers to raise awareness and compliance with the law on tobacco control, contributing to building a smoke-free working environment.
“No Smoking” signs are installed in many working areas at Doan Hung Power Company.
Phu Tho Electricity currently has 836 officers, employees, and workers (CBCNVNLĐ) working in 17 units. For electricity workers, men account for over 60%, so it is very difficult to completely ban smoking.
Identifying this issue, Phu Tho Electricity has promoted the implementation of Document No. 134/CĐĐVN-TGNC dated March 17, 2022 of the Vietnam Electricity Trade Union on strengthening propaganda about the harmful effects of tobacco to all employees to enhance their responsibility to the community, to build a smoke-free environment suitable for the professional cultural environment that the industry is building.
Along with that, the Union consults with the Board of Directors, including the regulation prohibiting smoking in the workplace in the internal regulations of the agency, unit, and factory; thoroughly educates employees to strictly implement the provisions of the law on tobacco control; guides, inspects, urges, and encourages union members and employees to properly implement the provisions of the Law on Tobacco Control; directs units and district electricity companies to effectively implement measures to build a smoke-free working environment, install signs, images, visual propaganda slogans, "no smoking" signs in the workplace, offices, departments, reception and customer care departments, warehouse areas, etc.
At the headquarters, there are separate smoking areas with notice boards reminding employees not to throw cigarette butts indiscriminately into the environment. The Electricity also includes the construction of a smoke-free working environment as one of the monthly criteria for evaluating the implementation of corporate culture. In case of first-time violations by employees, workers, civil servants, and laborers, they will be reminded at the meeting and their emulation will be downgraded if they re-offend. In addition, every year, the Trade Union also coordinates with the Electricity Youth Union to organize propaganda campaigns in response to World No Tobacco Day and National No Tobacco Week.
As an officer of the Business Department, Doan Hung Electricity, Mr. Nguyen Minh Quan has had a habit of smoking for many years. Thanks to the propaganda and reminders, Mr. Quan has changed his habit.
Mr. Quan shared: Right from the time I was recruited, I was informed and reminded about THCTL by the Doan Hung Electricity Union's leadership as well as signed a commitment to participate in building a smoke-free agency and implementing the Law on Prevention of Tobacco Harms. Thanks to that, I realized my responsibility and determined to quit smoking.
Building a smoke-free working environment is an important part of the office culture and code of conduct set forth by the Electricity industry. Comrade Nguyen Tien Nhu - Chairman of Phu Tho Electricity Trade Union said: "Through a period of drastic, serious and effective implementation, the PCTHCTL in the whole Company has become routine, the awareness of all employees at Phu Tho Electricity has been significantly improved. Besides helping employees improve their health, it also helps to increase work efficiency significantly. Maintaining a smoke-free environment has become a routine in the workplaces of departments, Electricity, teams and workshops, creating a regular awareness of officers, employees and workers in the whole Company, affirming the determination and beauty of Phu Tho Electricity's corporate culture, contributing to building a professional corporate culture environment, ensuring a clean, smoke-free, green-clean-beautiful, safe working environment, fire and explosion prevention, contributing to improving the quality of production and business activities"...
