In the past, the Australian team has finished second in the Southeast Asian Futsal Championship 4 times, in 2007, 2013, 2014 and 2015. In all 4 finals, Australia lost to Thailand. We have twice won the runner-up position in the regional tournament, in 2009 and 2012. In both of those second-place finishes, the Vietnamese futsal team also lost to Thailand.
In terms of achievements in World Cups, the Australian futsal team is better than the Vietnamese futsal team in terms of the number of times they have participated in the world tournament. Australia has reached the World Cup finals 7 times in 1989, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2012 and 2016, but has never passed the first round. The Vietnamese futsal team has participated in the World Cup finals twice, in 2016 and 2021.
The Australian team is the opponent of the Vietnamese team in the semi-finals of the Southeast Asian tournament.
However, in terms of quality in the world championships, the Vietnamese futsal team has achieved better results than the Australian team. Specifically, in both the 2016 and 2021 World Cups, the Vietnamese futsal team reached the round of 16.
The last time the two futsal teams Vietnam and Australia met in an official match was at the Southeast Asian tournament in 2022. At that time, the Vietnamese futsal team beat the Australian team 5-1 in the group stage. In the match 2 years ago, Nguyen Thinh Phat (2 goals), Tran Thai Huy, Chau Doan Phat and Nguyen Van Hieu were the ones who scored for the Vietnamese team. Among them, Thinh Phat, Thai Huy and Doan Phat are still wearing the Vietnamese team's jersey for the Southeast Asian championship in 2024.
In general, compared to 11-a-side football, in futsal, Australia is not a strong team in Asia. They still have a physical advantage over the other teams in Southeast Asia, compared to the Vietnamese futsal team. However, in terms of technique, Vietnamese players have better technique than Australians.
The Vietnamese futsal team (red shirt) has more chances to enter the final.
In this year’s tournament, Australia is in Group B with Indonesia, Myanmar and Cambodia. They have only earned 4 points after 3 matches, equal with Myanmar. Australia is only ranked above Myanmar due to the extra index, thanks to which Australia has qualified for the semi-finals as the second team in Group B.
Specifically, Australia only had 1 win in this group, when they beat Cambodia with a score of 9-2. The rest, they lost to Indonesia 1-3, tied Myanmar 3-3. Of the total 13 goals (average 4.3 goals/match) that the Australian team scored in the group stage, 9 of them were scored against the weak team Cambodia, showing that their attack is not too strong. On the contrary, the Australian team's defense conceded 8 goals after only 3 matches (average conceded nearly 2.67 goals/match).
The Australian futsal team (yellow shirts) did not perform very well in the group stage.
Meanwhile, the Vietnamese futsal team scored 23 goals (average 5.75 goals/match) and only conceded 3 goals (average conceded rate 0.75 goals/match). The Vietnamese team's stats are better than the Australian team's at this point. In theory, the chances of winning the semi-finals for coach Diego Giustozzi's team are higher, especially after we were boosted by the 3-2 win over Thailand yesterday (November 6).
