Tourists recklessly check-in close to erupting volcano

(Dan Tri) - A tourist recorded the Dukono volcano (Indonesia) erupting right behind him. This heart-stopping moment quickly attracted hundreds of thousands of views and controversy over the tourist's recklessness.

Echa Thawil is a travel content creator with over 5,000 followers on Instagram. He often shares moments from his trips such as visiting temples, palaces or climbing waterfalls.

Recently, Echa Thawil experienced a more adventurous challenge when climbing the Dukono volcano crater (North Maluku, Indonesia).

Video footage shows the crater surrounded by rocks covered in a thick layer of gray ash and pyroclastic debris. Within seconds, a red mass begins to rise from below, pushing the dusty rock surface higher.

Huge clouds of grey ash rose from the crater as Echa Thawil posed for a video before the eruption. Behind him, the ash cloud was visible.

The video was recorded by a friend who was with her and then shared by Echa Thawil on Instagram on January 31, attracting more than 250,000 likes and 1,300 comments from viewers.

Many people were excited and expressed admiration for the bravery of tourists standing close to the active volcano.

Meanwhile, some warn that it is crucial to monitor the volcano's activity before the trip.

"Safety should always come first, so make sure you travel with an experienced local guide," one travel experience sharing site wrote.

At 1,335m high, Dukono is one of 127 active volcanoes in Indonesia - a country located on the "Ring of Fire", an area with the highest frequency of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions on the planet.

Dukono is also one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. It is known that Mount Dukono is quite safe for climbers. However, visitors need to update the volcano's activity status before planning a visit.

According to Indopolitika, at around 9am on February 12, this volcano had a new eruption, creating a column of ash 1,100m high.

Indonesia's Volcanology and Geological Disaster Prevention and Monitoring Center advises residents and visitors to stay away from the area within a 3km radius of the crater. Volcanic activity is still ongoing and could spread ash depending on wind direction.
