On October 22, speaking at the opening of a synagogue in the city of Dessau, he affirmed that the country will “support and protect” Jewish life.
At the same time, the leader expressed shock at the spread of anti-Semitism “all over the world and shamefully also in Germany” since the October 7 attack by the Hamas Islamist movement on Israel.
He stressed that it was impossible to turn a blind eye “when Jews were not safe on the streets of Germany, when the Stars of David on houses were defaced, when synagogues were petrol bombed.”
Germany has seen a series of anti-Semitic incidents since the attacks and Israel's retaliatory bombing campaign, with several Jewish homes in Berlin defaced with Stars of David.
Notably, last week, attackers threw two petrol bombs at a synagogue in the city.
In related news, a day earlier, Mr. Scholz appreciated the first humanitarian aid shipment to the Gaza Strip.
Writing on social network X , the German Chancellor stated: “The good and important news is that the first humanitarian aid shipment is now being delivered to the people in Gaza.” He affirmed that Berlin will work “through all channels to minimize losses in this conflict.”
