Scoring classy goals, U23 Vietnam players remain humble

Sharing at the training session on the afternoon of September 4, player Nguyen Ngoc My, who scored the opening goal for U23 Vietnam in the match against U23 Bangladesh on the opening day of Group C of the 2026 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers, said he was very happy with his accurate goal.

"The match against U23 Bangladesh was the first match I was able to start and score for U23 Vietnam. I felt very happy and excited. I used to play at Viet Tri Stadium when I played for Phu Tho Club, so when I returned, I found it easy to get used to the space and the audience," said Nguyen Ngoc My.

Ngoc My's goal helped U23 Vietnam break the deadlock and have an easier match against U23 Bangladesh. In the end, coach Kim Sang Sik's team won 2-0 and temporarily took the lead in Group C.

"I still have a lot to improve, from touching the ball, moving, coordinating to finishing. The whole team has only been together for a few days, but the more we play, the more united and in sync we will be," Ngoc My said modestly.

The 21-year-old striker also got emotional when talking about his family, especially the moment he scored the opening goal: "I heard that my mother cried when she saw the goal. It was a special feeling, making me even happier when I did something to make my family proud. I would like to thank my mother for always accompanying and supporting me."

In the second match of Group C, U23 Vietnam will face U23 Singapore on the evening of September 6. Another victory will open the door for Coach Kim and his team to get closer to the goal of winning a ticket to the 2026 AFC U23 Championship finals.

"In the next matches, the whole team will try our best with the goal of making every match the final," said Nguyen Ngoc My.

Nguyen Ngoc My was born in 2004, belongs to Thanh Hoa Club. The 1.77m tall striker is one of the potential players, developed by coach Velizar Popov, and has won a National Super Cup with the Thanh team.

Ngoc My joined the Vietnam U23 team for the first time in July. Under the guidance of coach Kim Sang Sik, he and the Vietnam U23 team won the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship.
