Raw pineapple prices increase, businesses face difficulties

Due to spreading out the crop, Mr. Nguyen Viet Dung's family (Quang Trung ward) is preparing to harvest pineapple for the third time.

Trung Thanh Agricultural Processing Joint Stock Company (Thang Loi Commune) is an enterprise specializing in the production and processing of canned fruits and vegetables for export markets. The company's products are currently available in the markets of Russia, Brazil, Belarus, Romania, Türkiye, Mexico... with thousands of tons of pineapples.

Mr. Le Truong Tung, Director of the company, said: In 2025, the company plans to process 7,000 tons of pineapple for export. However, due to the high price of raw pineapple since the beginning of the year, especially since May, the purchase price has been 11,000 VND/kg (an increase of 25-30% over the same period), causing difficulties in the production activities of the unit, so there were times when it had to temporarily stop operations. Therefore, orders delivered to partners were not guaranteed on time, so the company was fined for breach of contract. To overcome the above situation and at the same time complete the set production plan, the company accepted to compensate for losses. In addition to purchasing raw pineapple in pineapple growing areas in the province, the company has imported more raw materials from provinces in the Central Highlands, even importing raw materials from Laos. By doing this, by the end of June 2025, the company had purchased and processed pineapple fruit, reaching 65% of the plan.

The high price of raw pineapple not only makes the production and export activities of Trung Thanh Agricultural Processing Joint Stock Company difficult, but many pineapple production and processing enterprises for export in the province also face difficulties and accept losses to ensure orders as well as production and export targets of the unit.

Thanh Hoa is the locality with the second largest pineapple growing area in the country, with an area of 3,700 hectares. Of which, 1,300 hectares belong to pineapple land of forestry farms and associated enterprises, the rest belong to households. Pineapple is grown in many localities such as: Ha Long commune, Quang Trung ward, Yen Phu commune, Ngoc Lien commune... Recently, due to the spread of pineapple growing, the price of raw pineapple has increased and fluctuated from 8,000 VND - 13,000 VND/kg, even at times increasing to 15,000 VND/kg, bringing profits to pineapple growers of hundreds of millions of VND/ha/year, so pineapple growers are very excited.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Dung, in Quang Trung ward, has 2 hectares of land for growing pineapples. Due to the spread-out planting, his family has 3-4 pineapple harvests each year, instead of just one harvest in the main season like before. Mr. Dung said: “By spreading the planting, the selling price has nearly doubled and there is no longer any worry about pineapples not being sold. Since the beginning of the year, my family has harvested pineapples twice in February and May, with prices ranging from 9,000 - 13,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, the family has a profit of 200 million VND.”

According to Mr. Dung, although the selling price has increased by 25-30% compared to previous years and traders come to the fields to buy, they do not buy in large quantities. Therefore, he hopes to have a business sign a contract to purchase the product when the pineapple is harvested, which will be convenient for hiring labor.

Not only Mr. Dung, many other pineapple growers such as Mr. Le Van Cong's family (Ha Long commune), Mr. Hoang Van Phu (Yen Phu commune) or Ms. Bui Thi Huong's family (Ngoc Lien commune) all wish to have a unit to sign a contract to purchase the products.

There are 4 pineapple processing factories operating in the province, including: Trung Thanh Agricultural Products Processing Joint Stock Company (Thang Loi Commune), Viet Agricultural Products Processing and Export Joint Stock Company (Nguyet Vien Ward), Tu Thanh Company Limited (Hac Thanh Ward) and Dong Xanh Agricultural Products Import-Export Joint Stock Company (Quang Phu Ward). However, most of the enterprises have not signed contracts to purchase products with pineapple growers, mainly buying through traders, so when the price of pineapple increases, the enterprises cannot buy pineapples and are forced to temporarily stop operations.

Therefore, to ensure the source of raw materials for processing and export, businesses need to proactively build and sustainably develop raw material areas. By signing contracts with pineapple growers to consume pineapple products. On that basis, build a reasonable price framework, ensuring harmonious interests between businesses and pineapple growers. In addition, people also need to strictly comply with the commitments in the process of linking production and product consumption, avoiding the situation where pineapples are sold to traders at a good price, and then sold to factories when they are cheap. State management units also need to strengthen propaganda and dissemination to people about the benefits and responsibilities in complying with production and product consumption contracts signed with businesses. At the same time, strengthen supervision and management of raw material areas, creating conditions for businesses to build and develop raw material areas for processing.
