'Decoding' the cause of prolonged traffic jams at Giai Phong intersection

During rush hour yesterday afternoon and this morning, in addition to traffic police, traffic inspectors and public order police were mobilized to regulate and guide vehicles, however, due to the heavy traffic volume, congestion still occurred.

Early this morning, on Giai Phong street in the direction of Ngoc Hoi leading to Giai Phong - Kim Dong intersection, there was a long traffic jam. The road has 4 lanes, but this morning, cars and motorbikes were lined up in 7 endless rows.

Regarding the current cause of congestion at the Giai Phong - Kim Dong intersection and Giai Phong Street, the leader of Traffic Police Team No. 14, Hanoi Traffic Police Department said that the intersection is currently fenced off for the construction of the Ring Road 2.5 tunnel, occupying more than half of it, but yesterday it was widened to construct a water pipeline system, causing the roadway to be narrowed further, causing congestion.

However, according to the survey and records of Tien Phong reporters, in addition to the above reasons, the main reason leading to the traffic jam here in recent days is the faulty traffic light system regulating vehicles passing through the intersection, the traffic light phases are not unified, leading to traffic conflicts.

Specifically, at Giai Phong direction, turn left onto Kim Dong street (towards the inner city), of the 4 traffic light phases here, currently only the green arrow light phase is working, the 3 most important light phases (green, red, yellow - red circle) are paralyzed.

Even though it is still working, this green light only shows a "motionless" green arrow.

Some vehicles, including cars, followed the arrows when there were no traffic police to regulate traffic, while the traffic light on Giai Phong Street in the opposite direction (Ngoc Hoi side) was also green, causing traffic flows to collide right in the middle of the intersection, causing prolonged congestion.

During rush hour yesterday afternoon and this morning, traffic was heavy, making traffic control difficult and strenuous.

Talking to Tien Phong reporter about the causes of traffic jams at Giai Phong - Ngoc Hoi intersection and Giai Phong street in recent days, Major Pham Duc Hoang, Captain of Traffic Police Team No. 14, Hanoi Traffic Police Department (PC08) said that the Team has grasped the situation and is coordinating with responsible forces to come up with appropriate solutions, including scientific traffic regulation to avoid conflicts.

With the traffic light system at the intersection being faulty, leading to inconsistent traffic regulation, Mr. Hoang said the Team has reported to the City Light Center and relevant units to repair and fix it soon.
