At exactly 11:30 a.m. (local time), or 4:30 p.m. ( Hanoi time) on October 6, the 2025 Nobel Prize announcement ceremony officially took place in the Swedish capital Stockholm, opening with the Medicine Prize.
Thomas Perlmann, Secretary of the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute, announced the winners of this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The prize honors the immunological discoveries of Mary E. Brunkow (born 1961, USA); Fred Ramsdell (born 1960, USA) and Shimon Sakaguchi (born 1951, Japan). The prize of 11 million Swedish krona (nearly 1.2 million USD) will be divided equally among the winners.
The Nobel Prize press release said, "Every day, our immune system must defend our bodies from thousands of different microorganisms that seek to invade them. They come in a wide variety of shapes, and many have evolved to resemble human cells as a form of camouflage. So how does the immune system know what to attack and what to protect?
Scientists Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi were awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their groundbreaking discoveries concerning the mechanisms of peripheral immune tolerance. They discovered the 'defenders' of the immune system, regulatory T cells, whose job is to prevent immune cells from attacking our own bodies.
“The discoveries of these scientists are crucial for understanding how the immune system works and why not all of us develop serious autoimmune diseases,” said Olle Kämpe, Chairman of the Nobel Committee.
Previously, the 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to two American scientists, Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun, for their research on microRNA and its role in gene regulation.
The 2025 Nobel Week will continue with the awards for Physics (October 7), Chemistry (October 8), Literature (October 9), Peace (October 10) and Economics (October 13). Each award includes a Gold Medal, a diploma and 11 million Swedish kronor.
The Nobel Prize award ceremony will take place on December 10, the anniversary of the death of the prize's founder, scientist Alfred Nobel.
