Thousands of boxes of frozen durian are livestreamed for sale at cheap prices

For the first time, thousands of boxes of frozen durian certified as 5-star OCOP products of the South were sold to Hanoi residents at preferential prices through the livestream channel.

On January 8, in Cho Lach district ( Ben Tre ), the Agricultural Trade Promotion Center (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ) together with TikTok Shop, Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Company Limited (Ben Tre), Viettel Post... jointly organized the megalive session "Winter Sorrow on Container Truck".

Customers are excited

This is considered the first time that a frozen durian product with a 5-star OCOP certification has been "on the market" to reach consumers. The livestream is limited to customers within Hanoi with a listed price of over 900,000 VND/box (2 Ri6 durians weighing about 5kg), but with the promotion, users can buy it for only 580,000-750,000 VND/box.

Excited to have just "hunted" an order of frozen durian via livestream channel for just over 680,000 VND, Mr. Nguyen Van Duc (Hanoi City) said he really likes to eat durian but in the North it is often difficult to access.

"The quality is not as good as fresh durian, but it is still very delicious. The price is much more affordable than many supermarkets selling at this time," said Mr. Duc.

Mr. Nguyen Khanh Toan, in charge of government relations at TikTok Vietnam, said that Chanh Thu Company has sent a container of frozen durian to the warehouse in Hanoi - equivalent to 1,670 boxes. The livestream sales program will take place until 11pm on January 8 with an expected number of thousands of orders. In case of need, the livestream will continue until January 9.

"In 2025, we propose a plan to sell 1 million frozen durians via livestream so that customers in all regions have the opportunity to buy them," said Mr. Toan.

Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy, deputy general director of Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Company Limited, said that frozen durian has great potential compared to fresh durian products, especially in preservation.

Specifically, with fresh durian, from the factory to the consumer usually takes only about 7-10 days, while frozen durian can be preserved for up to 2 years and the quality and flavor can reach 95% compared to fresh fruit.

Opening up opportunities to export to China via livestream

Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Nguyen Minh Tien - Director of the Agricultural Trade Promotion Center (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ) - said that due to the nature of frozen goods with difficult preservation and transportation, this is only a pilot phase.

However, this event has more or less suggested bright spots in new output solutions for domestic frozen durian products.

Not only that, according to the representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , in 2024, frozen durian from Vietnam will be officially licensed to enter China, and currently many transportation units such as Viettel Post... have built large cold storages in provinces bordering China, many export enterprises have deep connections in mainland China, easily bringing goods to bonded warehouses.

"Exporting frozen durian to China via livestream channels on Chinese social media platforms and hiring livestreamers right in this market is very promising. Not only that, this will be a suggestion for Vietnam to increase the export of agricultural products and frozen goods via livestream channels to China" - Mr. Tien emphasized.

Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy said that the factory’s capacity can supply tens of thousands of tons of frozen durian each year. If done well, freezing helps reduce the situation of good harvests and low prices and maintains a stable supply for customers.

"With quality input sources and a very low-temperature nitrogen freezing method, we have shipped thousands of tons of frozen RI6 durian to the US, Canada, Korea... Therefore, we are confident that we can conquer domestic or Chinese customers through the livestream channel," said Ms. Vy.

As a delivery unit, a representative of Viettel Post said that preservation and transportation are difficult, so currently only frozen durian delivery is applied within Hanoi city to ensure product quality.

However, with a wide warehouse network and abundant human resources, the unit plans to increase investment in cold storage to sharply increase the distribution rate of frozen goods, including durian, by 2025.
