Podolski (wearing a hat) shows off a photo that has gone viral on social media. |
In the match between Gornik Zabrze and Cracovia in the Polish Premier League on September 28, Podolski was not on the list of players due to a calf injury. Instead of staying at home or sitting in the stands for players, the former German international suddenly appeared in the stands for Gornik Zabrze fans.
Not only did the 40-year-old striker join in the frenzied atmosphere, he also stripped shirtless in the 9-degree Celsius weather. Images of Podolski shouting and dancing with fans quickly spread on Polish social networks and media.
On his Instagram account with 5.7 million followers, Podolski shared a series of photos with the caption: “With the Torcida Gornik (name of Gornik Zabrze fan group). Unbelievable passion. This is football!”.
The match ended 1-1, a result that kept Gornik Zabrze at the top of the table but only 1 point ahead of Cracovia. It is worth noting that just a week earlier, Podolski had been in the stands cheering on his teammates in the 3-2 win over Widzew Lodz, but he was still wearing his shirt.
Podolski has played for Gornik Zabrze since 2021. Although born in Germany, he has family roots in Poland and is a fan of Gornik Zabrze.
Before returning to Poland to play, Podolski played for many big teams such as Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Inter Milan and Galatasaray. In the peak season of his career (2011/12), Podolski scored 18 goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances for FC Koln.
