Renato Gaucho is a coach full of personality.

Fluminense's magical journey at the FIFA Club World Cup ended with a 0-2 defeat to Chelsea in the semi-finals this morning, but coach Renato Gaucho believes that what the Brazilian team showed is a reminder, not only to the world but also to football in his home country, that local coaches need to be respected more.

In just three months since taking charge, Renato Gaucho has transformed a team once battling relegation into a global sensation. Under the 61-year-old's guidance, Fluminense advanced to the FIFA Club World Cup and received rapturous applause from fans.

“I hope not only the world, but also Brazil itself, will look at Brazilian coaches in a different way and appreciate them a little more,” coach Renato shared after the match.

“I am not against foreign coaches. But people keep talking about them, while almost no one pays attention to local coaches. This tournament has shown that we can also do great things. And I hope that recognition will continue."

Fluminense fans filled the stands during the match against Chelsea.

As someone who has repeatedly spoken out against the influx of foreign coaches into Brazilian clubs, Renato Gaucho now has even more reason to assert his views.

Having helped Fluminense win the Rio state championship in 1995 as a player, he is now hailed as the club's reinvigorated figure, a model of homegrown coaching talent that has been underrated for years.

The atmosphere at this year's FIFA Club World Cup also reflected the enthusiasm of South American fans, who brought a festive atmosphere to the stands and witnessed their clubs create many surprises against the European giants.

As the last South American team remaining in the tournament, Fluminense can leave the world stage with their heads held high.

“Our fans are now more excited and happier,” said coach Portaluppi. “They expect us to continue this form when we return to Brazil and that is my commitment.”
