The Central Committee of the Vietnam Student Association believes that today's generation of students are not only good and creative students, but also responsible digital citizens who know how to protect themselves from risks and spread positive habits to the community. “With the responsibility of accompanying students, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Student Association has identified that equipping students with personal financial management skills and financial protection in cyberspace is one of the essential provisions. Because financial management is not just about daily expenses, but is the fundamental capacity for each student to mature, integrate, establish themselves and start a career. A student who knows how to spend reasonably, save and invest in studying and social experiences is the one who is laying the first bricks for a sustainable career in the future,” said Mr. Le Tuan Anh.

Speaking at the discussion, Le Gia Bao - a student of the K68 Banking and Finance class, said that in addition to family support, there are also other sources of income from part-time jobs. One of the methods of managing and accumulating his own finances from saving has helped him avoid being broke.

Every month, Le Gia Bao always determines his own spending and identifies his biggest and most necessary spending needs. From there, when he receives his salary and other income, he will balance it for necessary expenses and save the rest.

To master and manage your finances well, according to Le Gia Bao, you need to know your real needs and know when to stop before your desires.

Top 5 Miss Vietnam 2024 Pham Thi Thuy Duong also expressed her agreement with Le Gia Bao's views on saving. "Saving is the optimal method to avoid risks and prepare for unforeseen situations," Thuy Duong said.

Report: Need to understand yourself, spend appropriately according to your circumstances

Associate Professor Dr. Pham Tien Manh - Deputy Head of the Finance Department, Banking Academy, emphasized that in personal financial management, people often encounter two situations: having too little money and having too much money. When lacking money, investment and consumption opportunities may be missed; but when suddenly having a large sum of money (such as winning the lottery, land compensation, etc.), if they do not have management skills, many people will fall into wasteful spending, quickly lose everything and lead to social consequences.

According to the Deputy Head of the Finance Department, Banking Academy, for students, the first lesson to master money is to increase income, and the most practical way is to work part-time. However, students should choose jobs related to their major, helping to accumulate experience for the future, instead of just doing short-term jobs like driving technology cars.

The next issue is reasonable consumption. Students need to understand themselves, spend according to their circumstances, avoid following friends or emotions. Recording and tracking monthly expenses helps avoid falling into the "loop" of greed and fear.

In addition, students should form the habit of saving early. Just saving a small amount every month, transferring to a savings account or investing safely and long-term will create a necessary reserve.

Finally, the most important thing is to invest in yourself: study, take courses, improve your financial knowledge and life skills. This is the way to create sustainable value, helping students to be confident and take control of their future.

Pham Thi Thuy Duong - Miss Tourism and Environment, top 5 Miss Vietnam 2024 said, from a young age, your parents taught you about reserve funds, so you need to know how to balance your spending to ensure your immediate needs and save for the future. That first lesson has become a guideline for you to practice the habit of managing your personal finances.

In reality, Thuy Duong applies the 50-30-20 formula. Accordingly, 50% of income is used for essential needs such as studying, eating, and traveling; 30% is for hobbies and personal needs to help life be more balanced and enjoyable; and the remaining 20% is always used for saving or small investments, creating a reserve fund for the future.

Miss Tourism and Environment, top 5 Miss Vietnam 2024 shared, the formula seems simple but very effective, helping you avoid being "broke" at the end of the month, while creating a habit of planned consumption.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Giang, many people think that economics and financial management knowledge and skills are quite far away from them, and only those studying economics need to care about them.

"However, if we have little, use little, have much, use much, and know how to manage our finances, we will form a habit in the future. When we have the principles of managing our finances, we will always be proactive, never passive, and we will never fall into awkward situations," said Deputy Head of Retail Customer Policy Department, Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam.

Sharing about the role of banking technology in spending management, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Giang emphasized: Currently, banking platforms have integrated all the utilities and needs. In which, there are basic features for you to manage all your daily spending needs as well as entertainment and payment needs. The applications have the ability to set up budgets, warn about spending and manage income and expenses.

Sharing about the journey of accumulating and increasing assets, Deputy Head of Retail Customer Policy Department, Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam said that students are in the "most beautiful youth" but also the "poorest" stage.

To achieve big goals in the future such as getting married, buying a house, or studying abroad, saving needs to start from now, even with a very small amount of money. Forming the habit and skills of managing and investing according to your ability will help achieve your future expectations.

The Deputy Head of Retail Customer Policy, Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam also noted that students should not rush into volatile investment channels such as gold, virtual currency, or high-risk stocks without enough knowledge. Instead, start with small, disciplined and long-term investments, such as investment funds with expert advice.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Giang also noted the "golden rules" for safe banking transactions, specifically: The bank never asks you to provide anything via a link. Do not fill in anything in the link. Also, we never ask you to provide a password or user to log in to our application.

Closing the sharing session, Deputy Head of Retail Customer Policy Department, Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam sent a message to the young people attending the discussion: Equipping skills to protect personal finances and accumulate assets should be started right from school and maintained throughout life. When we have understanding, we will always be proactive in managing and protecting our assets.

The current online fraud situation mostly originates from criminal networks and groups operating in foreign countries such as Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines, the Middle East, etc. Once the money has been transferred to their accounts, it is almost immediately withdrawn, making it very difficult to get it back. After being scammed once, many people also create a scenario of "helping to get the money back" to continue to appropriate it.

The Vietnamese police have made efforts and successfully arrested many Vietnamese criminals abroad. Notably, on October 25-26, Vietnam will host the signing of the Hanoi Convention on Cybercrime - a United Nations convention in this field, named after a place in Vietnam, which is a great pride of the country.

Answering questions from students at the seminar, Colonel, Dr. Nguyen Hong Quan said: Scam calls and scams are constantly happening. Everyone needs to be alert to the benefits that fall from the sky.

The Director of the Training Center, Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (A05), Ministry of Public Security also asked the question: “Has anyone ever received a scam call?”. Many hands of students in the hall were raised.

Next, Colonel, Dr. Nguyen Hong Quan asked: "Is there anyone here who has been a victim of fraud?". No hands were raised.

The Director of the Training Center, Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (A05), Ministry of Public Security noted: If we lose faith in digital transactions and do not accept information online, it is very dangerous. We need to accept it calmly and have rules for receiving it. We are not alone, we do not put ourselves in isolation because we have authorities, schools, etc. to handle arising situations. This will help students never be scammed.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Pham Thanh Huyen - Head of Student Affairs Department, Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Associate Professor Dr. Pham Thanh Huyen - Head of Student Affairs Department, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, shared: Students are inherently intelligent and equipped with a lot of knowledge, but in reality, recently there have been many cases of fraud with sophisticated tricks.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Pham Thanh Huyen, the reason is that a number of students lack life skills, are gullible, trusting and sometimes immature in handling situations.

A typical example shared by the Head of Student Affairs Department, Hanoi University of Science and Technology is the case of a K70 student who had just enrolled. Although the school had repeatedly warned against participating in paper surveys, a student still participated and then received a call impersonating a competent authority, threatening to be involved in a fraud ring. When the subject threatened to detain him, the fear made him lose his vigilance, leading to the appropriation of all 6 million VND in his account. Only when the scammer asked for an additional 450 million VND did the student come to his senses and call the Student Affairs Department for help.

From the above incidents, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Thanh Huyen emphasized that students need to practice bravery. "If you have done nothing wrong, there is nothing to be afraid of. When being threatened online, you need to stay calm and immediately contact the school or the nearest police station. The Student Affairs Department is always committed to supporting students 24/7," Associate Professor Dr. Pham Thanh Huyen said.

"On the school's side, many solutions have been implemented to limit fraud. Warning information is regularly updated on the student portal, website, email and official fanpage. At the same time, right from the beginning of the school year, Hanoi University of Science and Technology also invited the police to exchange and equip students with knowledge on risk prevention," emphasized the Head of Student Affairs Department, Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Report AI is being used by criminals for online fraud

Le Tuan Kiet - Student of the University of Technology (Hanoi National University) shared: Currently, large corporations developing artificial intelligence, especially generative AI models, can fake voices and faces to serve many different purposes, including being exploited by criminals for online fraud.

However, at the same time, AI is also being applied to protect users. On platforms such as YouTube and TikTok, a number of verification and identification algorithms have been deployed to limit the spread of fake content. Many banks around the world also apply AI technology to detect unusual transactions, promptly warn and support the protection of customer rights.

"If users lack understanding of technology and social networks, the risk of being scammed is very high, so it is necessary to proactively equip themselves with knowledge and raise vigilance in every online activity," said student Le Tuan Kiet.

Colonel, Dr. Nguyen Hong Quan - Director of the Training Center, Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (A05), Ministry of Public Security, said: Fraudulent methods on the internet are extremely diverse, multifaceted and increasingly sophisticated. In particular, the form of fraud plays on our instincts: fear and greed.

Students and young people always have the need to work extra, creating more legitimate needs, so they find ways to lure students to participate in simple tasks such as liking or sharing an article. There are cases where they have been scammed out of billions of dong.

In addition, the subjects focus on building scenarios from an emotional and financial investment perspective. The subjects exploit fear through legal threats.

"To fight fraud, everyone must get vaccinated through discussions like today, to increase understanding, thereby controlling fear and greed," Colonel, Dr. Nguyen Hong Quan emphasized.
