The decision to fire Bayer Leverkusen was made on the afternoon of September 1, after a disappointing 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen in round 2 of the Bundesliga.

Despite leading 3-1 and having an extra man for the final 30 minutes, Ten Hag's side were left to play out a stunning equaliser, having previously suffered a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Hoffenheim in their opening game of the season.

In a recent statement, the Dutch strategist said he was completely surprised by this decision. "Saying goodbye to a coach after only two matches in the national championship is unprecedented," he shared.

Ten Hag stressed that building a new team takes time and patience, especially given that many key players left the club last summer.

"A new coach needs time to implement his vision, set standards and leave his mark on the team's style of play," said Ten Hag.

Next, the Dutch coach also expressed disappointment about not receiving enough trust from the board of directors. He shared: "I started the job with all my faith and energy, but it is a pity that the board of directors was not willing to give me enough time and trust.
