On the evening of September 3, U23 Indonesia disappointed when they were held to a 0-0 draw by U23 Laos in the first match of Group J of the 2026 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers.
After the match, U23 Indonesia coach Gerald Vanenburg pointed out the reasons for the draw. According to him, one of the core problems was not only the poor finishing ability but also the lack of playing time for the players at their home clubs.
Speaking after the match, he emphasized that the core problem was the team's poor preparation and mentality. According to coach Vanenburg, the players failed to show the spirit and concentration that the coaching staff had previously trained.
Notably, Mr. Vanenburg once again mentioned the role of domestic teams. He said that the lack of playing time at club level has affected the development and performance of national players.
The problem of poor finishing among young Indonesian players is not new and Mr. Vanenburg believes this is a major concern for player development.
This draw directly affects the goal of winning the top spot of the group of the "island of thousands of islands" team, because they have to face a very strong opponent, Korea, in the last round.
