Lao Cai is a land of diverse cultures. This is a rich material for artists to create works in fields such as literature, photography, music , dance, fine arts... Literary and artistic works on the subject of ethnic minorities not only contribute to preserving national values but also contribute to promoting culture, attracting tourists to Lao Cai.

Literature is a large part of the literary and artistic creation of ethnic minorities. The author is an ethnic minority who has been immersed in ethnic culture since childhood, so he can exploit the cultural depth. On the other hand, with the participation of other authors who have their own perspectives, creating a multidimensionality in expressing topics and genres. Each page of the book contains a profound philosophy of life. Compared to the general level of the country, Lao Cai 's literature and art are outstanding in the field of prose.

The works: novel “Lord of the Khau Sua region” by writer Hoang The Sinh; memoir “Lao Cai the roads” by writer Ma A Lenh; memoir “Taking care of studying on the misty mountain slope” by Meritorious Teacher Cao Van Tu; novel “Red bow” by writer Ha Lam Ky; memoir “The epic poem of the Northwest” by Nguyen Hien Luong; memoir “Muong Lo opens festival” by Hoang Viet Quan; essay collection “The thick flower season” by Pham Cong The; short story collection “Hun hut duong que” by Nong Quang Khiem; short story collection “Vach go” by Nguyen Ngoc Yen; memoir “The children of Hoang Lien mountain” by author Nguyen Van Tong… are living proofs for that statement.

“In order for works on ethnic minority topics to reach the public, they need to be promoted more widely in the community, media and schools. Authors bring life into their works and from their works they will serve life. Those works serve the development of society, educate traditions, and inspire the younger generation.”

Writer Ha Lam Ky.

If literature reflects life through words, photography reflects it through images. The winding terraced fields, the peach blossom forests blooming in the spring sky of the Northwest, the Mong boys and girls confiding in each other in the spring festival or the simple people of the highlands... are all brought to life through the lens of photographers. Names such as: Vu Chien, Gia Chien, Thanh Mien, Tuan Vu... have left many impressions.

As a photographer specializing in terraced fields in Mu Cang Chai, photographer Thanh Mien recalled more than twenty years ago: “I admire the Mong people’s feat of overcoming the harshness of the rugged mountains to create masterpieces of terraced fields! Their skillful hands and long-standing farming experience have helped them create works of art that have become special national landmarks. I have found masterpieces and named them: Golden Raspberry, Golden Ring, Silver Ring of the Mong people”. Now, homestays and resorts in Mu Cang Chai are always crowded with tourists. This shows the power of photography to spread, going straight to people’s hearts.

For dance, choreographers have exploited the language and dance materials in the lives of ethnic minorities or based on the unique features in customs, habits and lifestyles of the people to create works for professional stage performances. Many folk dances have gone beyond the space and living environment to become heritage. Artists have restored the ancient xoe dance and traditional festivals, creating a unique cultural space.

“When the festival was lost, I was very worried! However, the local government was determined to restore it and I received help from the elders to restore it to its original form."

Meritorious Artist Ha Bich Thao.

Since the restoration of the Long Tong festival in Thuong Bang La commune in 2008 and in the old Kien Thanh commune (now Quy Mong commune) in 2009, the festivals have been held regularly, becoming a traditional cultural feature and a place for people to have fun every early spring. Living in the mountains, each artist must have the responsibility to collect and preserve culture and national identity.

In addition, musicians: Phung Chien, Quach Hung... and painters: Nguyen Dinh Thi, Do Chung, Hien Luong, Tran Quang Minh... also exploit folk materials, vividly depicting the daily life, culture of ethnic groups, and natural landscapes through the fields of music and painting. Their achievements are not only reflected in awards but also in the love of the public.

Resolution 23 dated June 16, 2008 of the Politburo on "Continuing to build and develop literature and art in the new period" determined to concentrate all resources on building an advanced Vietnamese literature and art with strong national identity; building and developing a comprehensive team of artists in terms of quantity, quality and structure of genres... With the Party's resolution guiding the way, the passion and unceasing efforts of artists, Lao Cai will have more excellent works on ethnic minority topics, exploiting materials from the lives of ethnic communities living along the Hoang Lien Son range, blending into the general flow of literature and art.
