Eye damage, multiple injuries after fall from second floor

VnExpressVnExpress21/05/2023

Son La: An 8-year-old girl fell from the second floor and was taken to the provincial General Hospital with multiple injuries and critical health.

On May 21, the family said the child was playing with friends at home when he slipped and fell from the second floor, about 4 meters high. The child was hospitalized with severe pain in his calves and forehead and bleeding in his face.

Doctors held an interdisciplinary consultation including the Orthopedic Trauma Center, the Department of Dentistry and the Department of Ophthalmology, determining that the child had complex facial injuries, vascular damage, a ruptured left eyeball, and a fractured left temporal bone, requiring emergency surgery.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Chuyen, Head of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, said the child was severely injured and had to undergo surgery to remove and reconstruct the maxillofacial wound. However, the left eye had a ruptured eyeball, lost its function and could not be saved.

After surgery, the patient was conscious but had a headache and continued to be monitored for traumatic brain injury.

Doctors recommend that families need to closely supervise children and create a safe playing environment to minimize the risk of accidents and avoid unfortunate injuries. When children have an accident, they need to be taken immediately to the nearest medical facility for timely emergency care.
