A fair approach to migrants

Since September 15, the German government has officially increased control of the entire country's borders to prevent the increase of illegal immigration. So far, German police have increased border checks with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland. Border checks with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark will also be increased.

Following the Dublin agreement that required the first countries to receive asylum seekers arriving in Europe to welcome them, the European Union (EU) finally reached a new pact on “migration and asylum” earlier this summer.

Accordingly, EU members need to be more united, helping to ease the work of the first countries of entry. However, these regulations will not officially be applied until 2026. Le Monde (France) commented that, although not wrong, the announcement of re-establishing control measures at the German border without consultation once again shows the disunity in Europe.

The move sends a negative message to neighboring countries, which are facing similar problems with the movement of refugees. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said it was “unacceptable”. His Greek counterpart also “regretted” anything that weakened the Schengen area.

More and more countries are moving to deport asylum seekers. Berlin recently broke a long-standing taboo by sending back about 30 convicted Afghans. Austria and Cyprus also want to send Syrians back, prompting other EU countries to follow suit. The shift also risks having damaging repercussions in Brussels as it negotiates future rules, starting with profits.

Earlier, on July 18, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen affirmed: “The challenges of migration require a European response based on a fair and solid approach based on our values. Always remember that migrants are human beings like you and me. And we are all protected by human rights .”

Le Monde newspaper believes that, in the context of increasing demographic imbalance, along with the rise of the far-right, individual reactions are threatening the cohesion of the EU, as well as the values ​​that Ms. Ursula von der Leyen emphasized.
