Fashion legend Giorgio Armani passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, according to a press release from the famous fashion house that bears his name.

The talented designer worked tirelessly until his last days, dedicating himself to the company he had worked so hard to build, the statement said.

In an emotional joint statement, the Armani family and staff expressed their deep condolences: “In this company, we have always felt like a family. Today, we deeply feel the void left by the man who founded this family with passion and dedication. We are committed to protecting what he built.

Armani's departure comes after a period of absence from the brand's key events. Last June, he missed the brand's menswear show during Milan Fashion Week for the first time in 50 years.

According to AP, the designer still watched the show via livestream while recovering from his illness.

Giorgio Armani was born on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, Italy, and did not initially intend to pursue a career in fashion. He studied medicine for three years before leaving to perform military service.

He then found work in a Milan department store as a window dresser, eventually becoming a buyer. In the mid-1960s, he began his career in design, working for designer Nino Cerruti.

In 1975, he decided to start his own brand with his business partner. His fashion house quickly achieved great success thanks to the way he restructured men's suits, using softer materials and more comfortable, looser styles. This became a signature style, loved all over the world .

In the 1980s, Armani suits became a symbol of power for American businessmen, thanks in part to the brand's prominent appearances in movies.

The Miami Vice series in particular helped make Armani's loose-fitting suit-under-a-t-shirt style iconic, bringing Italian style fully into the American way of dressing.

After conquering the business world, Armani quickly turned to the red carpet. Julia Roberts made a strong impression when she wore a menswear-inspired suit to the 1990 Golden Globes.

Many other A-list stars are also fans of designer Giorgio Armani, including Rihanna, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway. He even designed clothes for Lady Gaga in the early days of avant-garde fashion.

When Armani designed Lady Gaga's entire outfit at the 2010 Grammy Awards, the singer praised: "Mr. Armani's designs for me are truly iconic. They represent not only fashion, but also my spirit and essence."

Cate Blanchett once shared that the reason she always returns to designer Armani is because: "He has an extraordinary blend of masculinity and femininity. I think that's the boundary that I really like aesthetically."

In a 2017 interview with How to Spend It , Giorgio Armani attributed his success to sticking to his signature style and not following temporary trends.

"I've never been interested in following trends just because they're popular. I have my own vision and ideas and I'm not afraid to go against the flow of fashion, because it changes constantly," he said.

As for the secret to his success and longevity, he gave a very simple formula: "Eighty percent of what I do is discipline. The rest is creativity."

Despite his brilliant career, he admitted it came at the expense of his personal life.

"I've come to understand that my success requires dedication. I've been disappointed many times because I had to give up relationships for work. But in reality, I have no regrets. I did what I wanted to do with my life," said the legendary designer.
