Responding to a question from Tom's Hardware reporter Paul Alcorn about whether Intel is willing to provide its advanced technology to direct competitors, CEO Patrick Gelsinger announced the company's intention to restructure this year, with the aim of making the Intel Foundry Services contract division more financially independent. He said the division's experts will be tasked with filling production capacity and reaching as many customers as possible.

Intel is ready to become a chip manufacturer for direct competitors.

Discussing the expansion of its contract client list, the Intel chief explained that the company hopes to include Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Google. Other future clients Gelsinger mentioned include Microsoft and even rival AMD. He also added that Intel wants to become a global contract chipmaker.

Intel will tailor its own components to customer needs. Modular layouts with multiple chips will allow the company to replace individual chip blocks with the ones a particular customer needs. This could be a solution the company has developed independently or as a result of developing different products.

Finally, the Intel chief reiterated that he wants the company’s contract manufacturing to be a choice for everyone. The company is willing to help produce Nvidia and AMD chips, Google’s Tensor processors, or Amazon’s AI processors. Intel also brings its advanced engineering processes to customers in the same timeframe as its main CPU team, meaning there will be no “host-client” distinction.
