Iran and Belgium exchange prisoners

Oman's Foreign Ministry said that under its mediation, Belgium and Iran have reached an agreement to release individuals detained by both sides.

According to Al Jazeera, the announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Oman stated that according to the agreement just reached, Iran has released a Belgian aid worker, while Brussels has returned a diplomat to Tehran. The prisoner exchange was conducted in the capital Muscat of Oman on May 26.

The Belgian aid worker was arrested by Iranian authorities upon his arrival in February last year and was later sentenced to 40 years in prison on 74 espionage charges. The incident came just months after Belgium sentenced an Iranian diplomat to 20 years in prison for his involvement in a bomb plot in France.
