According to a report from Zero Day, Kaspersky will begin closing its US branch starting July 20 and lay off employees working there.
Kaspersky will lay off employees in the US starting July 20 |
Kaspersky's move comes shortly after reports in June that the US was preparing to ban the sale of Kaspersky products, a move that has now been implemented.
The Russian security company initially said it would contest the court order but it is unclear whether that is still the plan given the latest news of layoffs.
In a statement quoted by Zero Day , Kaspersky said: "The company has carefully considered and assessed the impact of the US legal requirements and has made this sad and difficult decision because business opportunities in the US are no longer viable."
The report also said that fewer than 50 employees will be affected by the closure of the US branch. Some affected employees said they are receiving severance pay but did not disclose further details.
Kaspersky software is one of the leading anti-malware tools, so it gets a lot of privileges on Windows PCs. So the US government is concerned about the company's ties to the Russian government, which could lead to significant data leaks.
AFP news agency quoted the US Department of Commerce's statement on June 20 as saying: "Kaspersky will not be allowed to sell its software products in the US or provide updates to software already in use, along with other activities."
Additionally, white-labeled software products (products that integrate Kaspersky into software sold under a different brand) are also banned. Sellers and resellers who violate the restrictions will face penalties from the Department of Commerce.
The announcement comes after a lengthy investigation found that "Kaspersky's activities in the United States may pose a potential risk to national security."
