Opening of the Can Gio Whale Festival 2024: Echoes of the coastal region

On the evening of September 16, at Can Thanh Town Park (Can Gio District, Ho Chi Minh City), the opening ceremony of the Can Gio Whale Festival 2024 took place, with the theme "Can Gio Whale Festival - Echoes of the Coastal Region" and the Can Gio Fishermen's Celebration Ceremony.

The program is organized by the Organizing Committee of major holidays in Ho Chi Minh City, coordinated by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City and the People's Committee of Can Gio district.

Attending the opening ceremony were comrades: Vo Van Cuong, former member of the Party Central Committee, former Standing Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, former Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee; Nguyen Huu Hiep, member of the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, Secretary of the Thu Duc City Party Committee; Tran Thi Dieu Thuy, member of the City Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee... along with a large number of Can Gio residents and tourists attending the ceremony.

The 2024 Can Gio Whale Festival will be organized on a compact scale, minimizing festival activities. Can Gio Nghinh Ong Festival is one of the cultural symbols expressing people's gratitude to nature, reflecting the perseverance and courage of previous generations that have made this place a livable place. The festival began in the year of Quy Suu 1913, and has been going on for 111 years. This year, which is also the 11th anniversary of Can Gio Nghinh Ong Festival being recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage (2013), the festival still retains its values ​​and is increasingly welcomed by the people.

In addition to the opening ceremony, the same morning, the Flag Raising Ceremony officially took place at Can Thanh town park. This is the opening activity for the activities of the Can Gio Whale Festival 2024.

According to annual tradition, Can Gio Whale Festival is an occasion for fishermen and their families to express their deep gratitude to the God of the South Sea. No matter what they do or where they are, fishermen and their families arrange to return to their hometown to participate in rituals and activities, passing on legendary stories about the merits of the God of the South Sea who saved fishermen during storms and at the same time, thanks to the God's blessing, fishermen have had bountiful fishing seasons.
