Urgently review the overall risk of landslides

The landslide in Ha Giang on July 13 left 11 people dead and injured.

Records show that in the past few days, many regions across the country have had moderate to heavy rain. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that the rain will continue until July 17.

Specifically, the Northern Delta and coastal areas, Hoa Binh , Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri have common rainfall from 60 - 120mm, locally over 200mm. The Central Highlands have common rainfall from 40 - 80mm, locally over 150mm (heavy rain concentrated in the afternoon and night).

On rivers from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri, there is a possibility of a flood on small rivers and streams, upstream rivers at alert level 1, downstream rivers at alert level 1; high risk of flash floods, landslides in mountainous areas, localized flooding in low-lying areas along rivers and urban areas.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, one of the most concerning issues is landslides and flash floods in the Central and Northern mountainous regions. Vietnam has experience in preventing them, but modern technology has not yet been able to accurately predict the location of flash floods.

Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has requested localities to conduct a comprehensive review of landslide risks, especially upstream flows; at the same time, take advantage of local resources and knowledge to assess the risk of accidents.

Assessing the natural disaster situation in the coming time, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development assessed that natural disasters will continue to develop complicatedly. Therefore, ministries, branches and localities need to proactively monitor the forecast and warning situation of the National Hydrometeorological Agency and the local situation to proactively respond.
