Witnesses said dozens of gunmen from the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) group stormed the isolated village of Kayayya, 150 km from Damaturu (capital of Yobe State). The terrorists opened fire on residents trying to flee, killing 17 people and injuring five others.

The rebels launched the attack after villagers refused to pay the militants an unreasonable tax they demanded. This is a dangerous phenomenon in remote areas of Nigeria, where armed groups often demand illegal taxes from locals to exercise control and maintain resources for their operations.

Borno state in northeastern Nigeria is considered the rebel base. But in the past two years, the jihadists have expanded their range of attacks, carrying out massacres targeting villages, schools, markets and mass kidnappings.

Last April, ISWAP killed 11 people at a bar and technical college in Geidam.

Since 2009, terrorist attacks by this jihadist group have killed at least 40,000 people and displaced about 2 million people in the northeast of the country.
