The director of the port of Barcelona (Spain), Mr. Lluis Salvado, said that ships arriving at this port are being delayed by 10 to 15 days, because they have to go around Africa to avoid attacks in the Red Sea.
The delays have affected ships carrying all products, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), said Salvado, who is one of Spain’s largest LNG terminals.
However, he stressed that the current situation affects ports in the Eastern Mediterranean more, because the Western Mediterranean, including Barcelona, is closer to routes around Africa and therefore has shorter delays.
Some shipping companies have suspended shipping along the Red Sea route to avoid Houthi attacks. Many fuel tankers continue to use the route, while Qatar Energy, the world’s second-largest LNG exporter, has stopped sending tankers through the Red Sea due to security concerns.
