Expectations for the livestock industry

Hope the market will flourish during Tet holiday

In the early days of December 2023, we visited Mr. Huynh Van Be's house - Thien Trung village, Thien Nghiep commune (Phan Thiet city) - one of the long-standing, large-scale pig farming households in the area. With a fairly spacious farming space, his family invested in a scale of about 300 m2 of barns to raise about 140 pigs, including 20 sows, 80 pigs and 40 piglets. In fact, in recent years, farmers in general and pig farmers in particular often face difficulties due to unstable market prices, high costs of feed and input investment, leading to low profits, or even no profits.

As for Mr. Be's household, due to high food costs, they have to make use of leftover food, mix in family vegetables, and reduce the amount of industrial feed to reduce costs, and use labor as profit... Mr. Be calculated that with the daily selling price of live pigs being about 52,000 - 53,000 VND/kg, after deducting costs, the profit is not much. Therefore, this year the family "watched" to raise 20 pigs, after more than 6 months of raising, the average weight is now over 1 quintal/pig, and will be sold on the occasion of Lunar New Year, with the expectation that the price will increase compared to normal days.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam - a pork trader at Phu Thuy market (Phan Thiet city) shared: This time is preparing for Tet holiday so pork consumption has started to increase more than usual. Some pork products are bought in large quantities by consumers to prepare Tet dishes such as pig ears, sausages, spring rolls... Ms. Tam said that the selling price of live pigs has increased from about 53,000 VND/kg to about 55,000 - 56,000 VND/kg.

With encouraging signals from the market in the days before Tet, livestock farmers in general and pig farmers in particular in the province are hoping and expecting that pig prices will continue to improve, purchasing power will increase to increase income.

On the side of the Department of Animal Husbandry - Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, it is forecasted that pork prices during the Lunar New Year 2024 will not have major fluctuations. The reason is that the livestock situation of businesses and farms up to this point is still relatively stable. The rate of pig herds and pork products is quite abundant.

Will shift in a positive direction

Commenting on the province's livestock farming trends, the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine assessed that the province's livestock farming situation continues to be maintained stably. The total output of fresh meat in 2023 will reach about 89,000 tons, reaching 100.6% of the plan. Entering 2024, the province's livestock farming situation will continue to have a positive shift towards gradually reducing household and small-scale livestock farming. Currently, the province has over 212 concentrated livestock and poultry farms, of which 63 are large-scale farm farms, certified for biosafety, including 45 pig farms (212,100 pigs, accounting for 60.8% of the total herd). At the same time, the form of industrial and semi-industrial farm and household livestock farming, with disease and environmental safety control, is increasing. Accordingly, large-scale farm farming has contributed to increasing the total output of fresh meat of all kinds and the total annual herd of livestock and poultry of the province.

Regarding the livestock farming orientation in the coming time, the Provincial Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine said that Binh Thuan will focus on developing livestock farming in the direction of promoting the potential and advantages of the province to develop livestock farming into a commodity production industry, sustainable and adaptable to climate change. At the same time, develop and increase added value, ensure biosafety, disease, environment and food safety, meet market demand in the province and the whole country, create jobs, increase income for people. At the same time, support and create conditions for households raising livestock using traditional methods to gradually switch to farm and industrial livestock farming methods. In particular, overcome environmental pollution from livestock farming activities, transportation, slaughtering animals and distribution business.

The Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine also forecasted that in the first months of 2024, the animal disease situation will have many complicated developments, the risk of disease outbreaks in animals is very high, especially dangerous infectious diseases such as avian influenza, foot-and-mouth disease in livestock and African swine fever. Therefore, the unit will coordinate with local authorities in the province to effectively implement the month of general cleaning, disinfection and environmental detoxification. Focus on disinfection and detoxification in key livestock areas of the province, high-risk areas to destroy pathogens. At the same time, mobilize and encourage livestock farmers to gradually reduce small-scale and household livestock farming; focus on investing in developing farm livestock to apply advanced technology and techniques to gradually reduce the scale of small-scale and household livestock farming to better manage diseases. At the same time, it calls for chain linkage in livestock farming to reduce costs and create stable output for farmers... The year 2024 is starting and brings new expectations for the livestock industry in general and pig farming in particular to flourish.
