Leverkusen sparks debate over player salary cap

In the context of the Premier League becoming increasingly overwhelmed financially, Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro attracted attention when calling for an international salary cap for players.

The income of football players in Germany is far less than that of the Premier League.

Speaking at the Bloomberg Future of Finance conference in Frankfurt, Carro bluntly warned: “The Premier League is trying to become the number one product in Europe, even surpassing the Champions League. We have to fight for an international salary cap.” He stressed that only when applied globally and absolutely will this measure be effective.

Currently, UEFA has a mechanism to control team spending based on revenue, while some national championships such as La Liga also apply their own salary caps. However, the difference is still increasingly obvious.

UEFA's latest report shows that the Premier League will earn more than 7.1 billion euros in the 2023/24 season, double the 3.6 billion euros generated by the Bundesliga. This gap makes many teams outside England increasingly lose steam in the race for European cups.

Carro admits he is against rigid regulations, but in this case he believes it is “the right thing to do” to protect the balance and future of the Champions League.

Leverkusen's CEO's proposal immediately sparked a major debate: Is it time for European football to accept a global salary control mechanism, or is this just a distant dream in the context of the Premier League still holding an absolute advantage in terms of revenue?
