On March 13, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of An Giang province sent a dispatch to the Department of Health and the People's Committees of districts, cities and towns in An Giang province requesting comments to submit to the Provincial People's Committee to issue a dispatch directing strict implementation of rabies prevention and control in animals.
Specifically, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of An Giang province informed that on March 7 and 8, a stray dog, not vaccinated against rabies in O Long Vi commune, Chau Phu district, showed signs of rabies and bit 3 people. The test results of the Veterinary Medicine Department of Region VI showed that this dog was positive for the rabies virus.
On March 10, another stray dog in Binh Duc hamlet, Binh Phu commune, Chau Phu district continued to bite 3 people. Upon receiving information from the people, the Chau Phu district Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station arrested the dog. Test results showed that this dog was positive for rabies virus.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of An Giang, these are the first two rabies outbreaks in animals in the province since the beginning of 2024. The main reasons are that the organization of rabies vaccination for dogs has not met regulations; sanctions have not been applied to handle violations of regulations on dog management and rabies vaccination for dogs; awareness of a part of the people about the level of danger and regulations on rabies prevention and control is still limited; inter-sectoral coordination, especially between the veterinary sector, the health sector and the authorities in some localities is still very limited...
