CCTV said more than 180 rescuers had been dispatched to the scene and search and rescue operations were continuing.
Weather monitoring data showed that Leshan city had been hit by heavy rain for two days before the incident. Sichuan is an area prone to landslides, with high casualty rates.
In 2017, a landslide from a 3,000 meter high mountain occurred at 6:00 a.m. on June 24 in Xinma, Sichuan, China. It created a 2 km long pile of rocks and soil blocking a river in this county, burying 62 houses and leaving 120 people missing.
