Special class in Truong Sa

VietNamNetVietNamNet25/05/2024

Da Tay Primary School in the middle of the ocean, the most remote place in the country, becomes special when the classes sit together in one room.
In the 2023-2024 school year, the Truong Sa archipelago will have a new school amidst the stormy sea. That is Da Tay Island Primary School, inaugurated in mid-2023 and put into use from the opening day. The school is located next to the People's Committee building of the island commune.
Students at Da Tay Kindergarten study twice a day. At noon, they go home to eat and rest.
The school is spacious, clean and beautiful. Teacher Ung Van Tuan (born in 1992) is in charge of teaching kindergarten students. He said that the teachers are under the Department of Education of Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa province. He volunteered to teach on the island.
Teacher Luu Quoc Thinh (at Da Tay A Primary School) shared: "I have worked in the education sector for 20 years, spending a lot of time teaching on the mainland. This time, I want to go to the island to work, to find something new to make life less boring. After being here for nearly a year, I find my teaching more meaningful."
The class has 5 levels of students from grade 1 to grade 5. On the board, the learning content of each grade is separated by vertical chalk lines. With teaching elementary school with different grades, in a school day, Mr. Thinh mainly focuses on teaching Math and Vietnamese.
His wife also works in the education sector, so when he intended to go to the island to teach, Mr. Thinh received great support from his wife and colleagues.
There is no internet on the island. The teachers came up with the idea of using the TV they were given, using USD to copy videos for the students to watch, and then they could watch for themselves.
Having been part of the new textbook training team and the provincial textbook selection council for many years, Mr. Thinh has a firm grasp of new knowledge and new teaching methods. “It’s just a pity that I didn’t have time to join the 5th grade council before I went to the island. This summer, I will take the opportunity to update new knowledge for 5th grade to teach the students,” he said.
Teacher Luu Quoc Thinh worries: “Students must be equipped with English and IT to become fully qualified citizens. Even though they are in a remote place, we cannot let students lack knowledge. We still try to make up for it. In the photo is the notebook of Le Khoi Vi - a 3rd grade student of the school who is studying the book series Connecting Knowledge.
With tanned skin and a gentle smile, teacher Thinh shared: The responsibility and heart of a teacher are the "keys" to open up miracles, so that the green buds on Truong Sa archipelago can grow healthy, so that those remote islands can be peaceful amidst the waves.
Every time a delegation visits the island, the students of Da Tay Primary School have the opportunity to participate in cultural exchanges and take group photos. In the photo is the delegation of the Vietnam Dance Academy with soldiers and students.
