Preserving the beauty of the countryside

Việt NamViệt Nam09/06/2024

“In my village, almost every house has “banana behind, areca in front”. Planting areca is not only to beautify the house, to eat with betel “to start a conversation”, but also to offer to ancestors on full moon and death anniversaries, and as dowry gifts on weddings...”.

Areca nut cultivation brings stable income, so many farmers in the province have renovated and restored areca nut gardens to increase income and at the same time contribute to beautifying the countryside.

Those are the shares of Mr. Hoang Van Viet in zone 4, Xuan Huy commune, Lam Thao district when talking about the tree that carries the soul of the place where he was born and attached. Mr. Viet said that, in the past, areca trees were considered a special mark of each family in the village. Because just by looking at the row of areca trees in front of the house, strangers could know how many members that family had. Like Mr. Viet's family, for example. After giving birth to 4 children, his father went to the market to buy 6 small areca trees to plant in the yard. Although they were planted at the same time, on the same piece of land, over time, the 6 trees had different sizes. The first two trees symbolize the tallest father and mother, the remaining 4 trees are smaller and shorter like 4 siblings in the family. The villagers believe that the areca tree is a symbol of bravery, reunion and prosperity. Any areca tree that grows well and lives long is blessed. If unfortunately a tree is diseased, wilts or falls, it is a bad omen, so another tree must be found to replace it...

As a locality that still preserves the beauty of areca planting to decorate the countryside, everywhere in the village roads and alleys in Lam Thao, you can see the silhouette of areca trees and tall rows of areca trees. The types of areca trees that people here choose to plant are mainly dwarf areca and white areca. Dwarf areca areca are often planted as ornamental plants in gardens, medium height, slightly swollen trunk base, with many prominent roots. White areca have tall, round trunks, white flowers and especially the fruit when ripe is red, very eye-catching. The tree is up to 10 meters high, with round trunks, close together joints, often planted in school yards, cultural houses...

In recent years, in addition to serving the spiritual needs and the betel chewing habit of many people, areca nuts have also been consumed strongly thanks to the export demand to the Chinese market. Currently, each bunch of areca nuts (100 nuts) has a selling price ranging from 200,000 to 300,000 VND. Income from areca nuts is stable, so many farmers have begun to renovate and restore areca gardens to create additional income, while contributing to beautifying the countryside with straight rows of areca nuts along the new rural roads.

Having been involved in the profession of “eating on the ground and working in the sky” for many years, at the end of summer, Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, Cam Khe district, is busy traveling back and forth to Lam Thao, Thanh Ba, Ha Hoa districts - areas with many areca trees in the province to buy areca trees. Mr. Dung shared: “Areca season starts from July to December. The purchased areca trees must ensure the following factors: round, intact and shiny green fruit, without missing the areca tip... With an average selling price of 60,000-70,000 VND/kg, with bunches full of fruit, the seller can earn millions of dong...”.

Along with green bamboo hedges, banyan trees, ferry wharves,... the areca tree is one of the familiar images, leaving a strong impression of the countryside. The cultural beauty of growing areca in home gardens or the appearance of betel and areca in ceremonies and important occasions of life is a way for people to cherish and continue their relationship with areca, creating good economic and spiritual values for generations.
