According to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-800 scheduled to fly from Denver, Colorado to Houston, Texas had to return to Denver International Airport after the engine cover fell off and hit the wing.
In an air traffic control recording, a pilot said “a number of passengers and flight attendants heard a loud banging noise on the wing.” Southwest Airlines said passengers were transferred to another plane to Houston, about three hours later than scheduled, according to CNN.

Southwest Airlines also said maintenance teams would review the incident. The plane was cleared by the FAA in May 2015. Boeing declined to comment on the details of the incident.
This is the latest in a series of mechanical problems that have hit Boeing planes operated by multiple airlines in recent months. The company has faced years of intense scrutiny over the safety of its planes.
