Messi and Son Heung-min will continue to work together for many years in MLS
Son Heung-min has just arrived in MLS not long ago, but has immediately left a strong impression and is creating a fever with American fans as well as the Korean community here, when he continuously scored goals for Los Angeles FC. Most recently, this star scored a hat-trick to help the home team beat Real Salt Lake with a score of 4-1 on September 18, to rise to 4th place in the MLS Western region rankings.

Son Heung-min has only played 6 matches for Los Angeles FC, but has scored 5 goals and had 1 assist. The 33-year-old Korean star is quickly becoming a new icon in MLS.
Meanwhile, Messi is in the final months of his two-and-a-half-year contract with Inter Miami (which ends at the end of December this year). The concern about whether the 38-year-old Argentine will extend his contract to play in MLS, alongside Son Heung-min, thereby continuing to help develop American soccer, has finally been answered.
ESPN confirmed that Messi and Inter Miami had reached an agreement to extend his contract for "many more years" on September 18 (Vietnam time). The US newspaper USA Today also reported on the same day that Messi will sign a contract extension for "at least two more seasons until 2027".
"A deal between Messi and Inter Miami is expected to be completed soon. It is currently about 85% complete as of September 18. Once agreed, the contract will be sent to MLS for final approval. After that, all that remains is to announce it to the public at an appropriate time," USA Today confirmed.
"Both Messi and Inter Miami have expressed interest in extending; Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas previously told ESPN that the club would do "anything in its power" to ensure Messi is comfortable staying and retiring there," ESPN stressed.

A source also shared with USA Today that Messi sees the contract extension with the club "as an opportunity to take Inter Miami further in MLS, in American soccer and globally", and will also prolong his playing career, beyond the possibility of attending the final 2026 World Cup of his career with the Argentina team next summer.
Inter Miami is expected to open its new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, in 2026. Messi will be at the center of the project, alongside David Beckham, the team's president and co-owner with billionaire brothers Jorge and Jose Mas.
In the ongoing 2025 season, Messi has played a total of 36 matches for Inter Miami so far. He has scored 28 goals and provided 14 assists in all competitions, including the CONCACAF Champions Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, Leagues Cup and MLS.

Messi is currently Inter Miami's all-time leading scorer, and is second on the MLS scoring list with 20 goals. He is also Inter Miami's all-time leading scorer with 62 goals and 29 assists since joining the club in July 2023.
On September 17, Messi returned to the fire with 1 goal and 1 assist to help Inter Miami take revenge on Seattle Sounders FC with a score of 3-1, the team that beat them in the Leagues Cup final on September 1. Thereby, returning to the MLS championship race. Messi also became the 5th player in MLS history to score 20 or more goals in two consecutive seasons.
