Western Nghe An: Severe flooding and landslides after storm No. 5, hundreds of households had to be urgently evacuated

Affected by storm No. 5 and heavy rain, many communes in Western Nghe An suffered landslides and severe flooding, forcing many households to evacuate urgently on the night of August 25.

In Muong Tip commune, at 3am on August 26, there was heavy rain, strong winds, and rapid rising of water in streams, causing a kindergarten in Xop Xang village and many households' houses to be flooded 1-1.5m deep, forcing the evacuation of 13 households and 85 people.

Muong Tip commune authorities worked all night to help people evacuate their property, ensure their lives, and move them to safety.

In My Ly commune, the historic flood at the end of July swept away more than 260 houses, which have not yet been repaired, and many households still have no homes to live in. Continuing to be affected by storm No. 5, in the afternoon and night of August 25, more than 20 households in Xang Tren village, My Ly commune had to urgently evacuate to ensure safety.

Due to continuous heavy rain, last afternoon and night (August 25), My Ly commune evacuated 131 households, 553 people in Xang Tren village (105 households, 420 people); Pieng Vai village (16 households, 80 people), Yen Hoa village (6 households, 31 people) and Xop Tu village (4 households, 22 people).

In Nhon Mai commune, although the authorities had proactively evacuated people on August 25, by nightfall, many landslides and flooding risks had occurred, so evacuations had to continue overnight. As of 7 a.m. on August 26, Nhon Mai commune had evacuated 221 households and 1,916 people.

At the same time, due to heavy rain, rapidly rising stream water and landslides, 11/21 villages were temporarily isolated (with 575 households and 2,817 people). "Currently, there is no electricity and unstable phone signal, making it difficult to support people," said Mr. Le Hong Thai - Chairman of Nhon Mai Commune People's Committee.
