Corn silk, which is usually discarded when processing corn, is considered a rare medicinal herb, even being compared to ginseng in terms of nutritional value. Known as jade rice, corn silk is often used in traditional medicine to treat diseases related to the liver and gallbladder.

Corn silk contains vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin B1, B2, B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin C, vitamin PP, flavonoids, pantothenic acid, isotol, saponins, steroids such as sytosterol and sigmasterol, bitter substances, fatty oils, essential oil traces and many other trace elements.

It can be said that corn silk is a mixture of many vitamins and micronutrients in natural form that are necessary for the body to fight oxidation better than any other supplement.

Dr. Bui Thi Yen Nhi, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Campus 3, said that corn silk has diuretic, heat-relieving and liver-calming effects. It is often used as a bile-clearing medicine, to treat jaundice, edema, edema, eliminate dampness, and as a diuretic, to clear heat in the blood, and to lower blood pressure.

In folk medicine, people often use corn silk water as an effective method to cool down the body and balance liver function. To increase the effectiveness, people often combine corn silk water with other herbs such as plantain, chrysanthemum, cogon root, and reed, making it into a refreshing, cooling, and healthy drink.

Pediatricians say that corn silk water contains substances such as saponin and flavonoid, which help dilate blood vessels, reduce extracellular fluid volume, and increase sodium excretion. Drinking corn silk water can reduce blood pressure, stabilize blood sugar, and support the treatment of high blood lipids.

Notes when using corn silk water

Corn silk has many health benefits, but should not be used as a substitute for drinking water.

“Overuse of corn silk water can cause excessive diuresis, long-term use can cause water and electrolyte imbalance. Do not drink it at night because it can cause frequent urination at night,” Dr. Nhi noted.

When using corn silk, it should be used fresh because it contains more nutrients than dried. Dried corn silk should only be used for a short time, avoid storing in damp places as it can easily cause mold, which is harmful to health.

According to pediatricians, some people need to be careful when using corn silk such as:

- Drinking corn silk water can cause low blood pressure, dizziness, fatigue and other unpleasant symptoms of the digestive tract, and even make low blood pressure worse.

- For people with hypoglycemia, drinking corn silk water can worsen hypoglycemia symptoms such as nervousness, hand tremors, and sweating.

- Corn silk contains a certain amount of pollen that can cause discomfort to people with pollen allergies.

- Patients taking anticoagulants should not use corn silk water.

Doctor Yen Nhi noted that each person's physical condition and health are different, so before using corn silk water, it is best to consult a medical specialist for advice to ensure safety and effectiveness. Moreover, if you are taking other medications to treat diseases that may interact with corn silk water, it is even more necessary to consult a medical specialist.
