US wants to resume military contact, China ignores

Washington has yet to receive a response from Beijing on its proposal to resume military contacts, said Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Charles Brown.

Speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum in Simi Valley, California on December 3, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Charles Brown, said that the country is waiting for a positive decision from China. Mr. Brown noted: "The ability to maintain dialogue, whether with allies or opponents, is really important. In the case of opponents, this is necessary to avoid misjudging the situation."

At a Sino-US summit in November, President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping pledged to restore military communications that were cut off after then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan last year.

Before this meeting, Mr. Brown said he had written a letter to General Liu Zhenli, Chief of the General Staff of the Central Military Commission ( CMC ). In the letter, General Brown called for the restoration of bilateral communication channels. However, according to the American General, he has not been able to contact Mr. Liu Zhenli directly.

In addition, General Brown believes that the US still has an advantage over China in the fields of cyber capabilities and artificial intelligence (AI), but he stressed that Washington cannot "rest on its laurels".

Referring to the Ukraine conflict, General Brown stated that the US is trying to shape the outcome of the war by providing additional aid to Kiev, but admitted that "with any military conflict, it cannot be completely resolved by military means and the conflict will only end with a diplomatic solution."
