Ho Chi Minh City opens pilot AI class for excellent students

203 excellent students were selected to get acquainted with programming, data and artificial intelligence (AI) early in Ho Chi Minh City.

On the afternoon of July 23, the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City held the opening ceremony of an artificial intelligence (AI) training program for students who won awards in academic competitions in the city.

This is the first step in the strategy of training high-tech human resources right from high school age.

The program is piloted with 4 classes, including 2 classes for middle school students and 2 classes for high school students. The classes focus on providing basic knowledge of Python programming, algorithms, data processing and practical AI applications, from basic chatbots to advanced machine learning models.

A total of 203 students were admitted to the course, coming from many typical high schools in the area such as Gifted High School, Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted, Le Hong Phong High School, Tran Phu Middle School, Saigon Practice School, and many other public, private and international schools.

According to Mr. Lam Dinh Thang - Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City , developing artificial intelligence is one of the three strategic pillars in the city's AI orientation, besides building technology infrastructure and promoting AI applications in practice.

He emphasized that the city focuses on AI training for three groups: civil servants, students and citizens. For students, the goal is to equip them with knowledge and at the same time discover and nurture technological talents early.

Thereby, Ho Chi Minh City can gradually form a high-quality human resource force to serve digital transformation and the 4.0 industrial revolution.

According to Mr. Thang, the city is building excellent research centers, high-performance computing centers shared between the State - enterprises - universities, and coordinating with the education sector to build a standard AI curriculum framework to be regularly taught in high schools.

The first batch of AI training will take place over 12 sessions. The program is expected to lay the foundation for mass training expansion in the future.

Ho Chi Minh City also aims to form a community of high school students who love AI and have the ability to research and develop technology while still in school.
