Passed first choice but still failed university entrance exam

In the 2025 high school graduation exam, Lang Duc Bang (former student of Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities No. 2, Nghe An province) scored 29 points in block C00 with 9.25 in Literature; 9.75 in History and 10 points in Geography. With that result, he was admitted to his first choice at the Border Guard Academy, being one of the 10 candidates with the highest admission scores.

In early September, the Thai ethnic male student entered school amid the joy and pride of his teachers, family and villagers. The Border Guard Academy was the school he had always dreamed of since childhood. But after only a few days of entering school, he was forced to return home due to health reasons.

The results of the health check at school showed that Bang had hepatitis B. The school created conditions for him to be treated at the hospital for 11 days, but the test results were still positive. On September 27, according to the regulations of the Ministry of National Defense , he was forced to return to his hometown.

“Before registering for the Border Guard Academy, I had participated in a preliminary medical examination but was not diagnosed with any disease. When the school informed me that I had to return home, I felt very sad and hopeless,” Bang shared.

Having missed his appointment with the "green army uniform", Lang Duc Bang returned to his hometown and hopes to continue his studies at the Faculty of History, Vinh University, according to his previously registered second wish.

On October 2, the Border Guard Academy sent a document to the Department of Higher Education ( Ministry of Education and Training ) and Vinh University, requesting coordination to consider and create conditions for candidate Lang Duc Bang to be accepted according to his wishes. The document clearly stated that due to health reasons, Bang did not meet the admission requirements according to the regulations of the Ministry of National Defense.

"I passed my first choice to enter the Border Guard Academy but could not continue studying. As for my second choice to enter the History Pedagogy major at Vinh University, the admission portal has been closed since September 16," the male student said.

Desire to go to school

Although the university entrance is still full of difficulties, the Thai ethnic boy has not given up on his dream of studying. He has written a letter to the Minister of Education and Training asking for consideration for his study opportunity, but is still waiting for the results.

In the letter sent to the Minister of Education and Training, Bang confided his simple circumstances and dreams. The neatly handwritten lines contained regret and the desire to continue going to school.

“I am an ethnic minority, my family circumstances are difficult, my parents work hard all year round in farming. Therefore, I always try to study hard, hoping to get into a Police, Military or Pedagogical school to help my parents reduce the burden of tuition fees. My dream was just a little bit away but suddenly it became distant. I respectfully hope that the leaders at all levels will consider and create conditions for me to study my second choice - the Faculty of History, Vinh University, so that I do not miss the opportunity to study due to force majeure...”, Bang wrote in the letter.

Lang Duc Bang is the only son in a poor family in Ke Me village, Mau Thach commune. Throughout his high school years, he always strived to improve himself. He dreamed of becoming a soldier or a teacher, both to contribute and to reduce the burden of tuition fees, helping him to pursue university. In August 2025, Bang was one of 75 excellent students in the high school graduation exam recognized by the People's Committee of Nghe An province.

Ms. Ho Thi Hoi (Lang Duc Bang's homeroom teacher) shared: "Lang Duc Bang is a good and excellent student who always overcomes difficulties in life. When we heard that he was admitted to the Border Guard Academy, everyone was happy. However, when he was re-examined for health, he did not pass, so the school sent him back. Currently, he is struggling with no direction because the second admission portal has been closed for a long time. I hope the Ministry of Education and Training and Vinh University will consider and create opportunities for Bang to continue pursuing his university path and nurture his dream."
