The Russian Military Review, citing sources from the Russian Army's Southern Group of Forces (RFAF), said its assault units continued "cleaning" operations in the area south of the Kleban-Byk reservoir, located a few kilometers south of the city of Kostiantynivka. The remaining Ukrainian troops, who were unable to escape the Russian encirclement, are being destroyed because they refuse to surrender. The Ukrainian group, surrounded south of the Kleban-Byk reservoir, consists mainly of the 12th Azov Brigade, part of the National Guard, as well as the Lyut Brigade, which consists of police officers.
The air forces had no intention of surrendering, so they were simply destroyed in the “clean-up” operation by the Russian troops. According to the press spokesman of the RFAF Southern Group of Forces, they eliminated from the battle 10 Ukrainian soldiers entrenched south of Lake Kleban-Byk, taking control of more than 1 square kilometer of territory. As Military Review reported earlier, Ukrainian troops trapped near the reservoir are trying to escape across the lake by building rafts from plastic bottles. However, not everyone is successful, firstly because the reservoir is too large, and secondly, Russian UAVs are constantly operating above the lake, simply giving them little chance of survival. Russia's Rybar channel reported that fighting was fierce south and east of the Kleban-Byk reservoir. After more than a month of siege and continuous attacks, an assault battalion of the 12th Azov Assault Brigade and the Lyut Brigade, with more than 800 soldiers, was reduced to about 80 people. With nowhere to run, the Ukrainians are still holding out in the woods, but ammunition and food supplies are running low. On September 27, Russian military sources said that the trapped Ukrainian remnants were trying to escape, either by building rafts or swimming across the Kleban-Byk reservoir. After discovering that Ukrainian troops were escaping the encirclement by crossing the lake, the Russian military adopted a more humane measure, using UAVs to broadcast messages and drop leaflets to persuade the remaining Ukrainian troops to surrender, but received no response.
After several unsuccessful attempts at persuasion, the RFAF ordered the complete destruction of the remaining troops of the 12th Azov Brigade on the southern shore of the Kleban-Byk reservoir. By the morning of 28 September, the RFAF had discovered and sunk several rafts, killing more than a dozen Ukrainian soldiers (two of whom had attempted to cross the lake and were carrying weapons). Whether the Ukrainian troops are on rafts or swimming, they will have to cross the Kleban-Byk lake area, which has a minimum width of more than 600 meters of water, a distance long enough for Russian UAVs to have enough time to carry out “reconnaissance + attack” operations; ensuring that not a single Ukrainian soldier crossing the lake can survive. This incident clearly demonstrates the cruelty of modern warfare. The remnants of the 12th Azov Brigade, desperately trying to escape, were met with a tight Russian blockade. The RFAF's efforts to convince them to surrender showed a certain degree of moral warfare, but after failing, they were forced to resort to drastic measures to achieve their military objectives. Meanwhile, north of the Kleban-Byk reservoir, in the city of Konstantinovka, the RFAF Southern Group is slowly breaking through enemy defenses. Footage has been released online, showing Russian troops using TOS-1A Solntsepek heavy thermobaric artillery, attacking AFU UAV control centers near Konstantinovka.
The video shows TOS-1A systems firing thermobaric rounds at Ukrainian positions where UAV control stations are believed to be located. Among other things, antennas were also hit, along with Starlink satellite internet terminals used by AFU commanders to control the operations of their subordinates. It is worth noting that it was thanks to the work of the AFU UAV force that the Ukrainian army was able to withstand the RFAF's fierce attack. This is why the identification and destruction of UAV control centers is currently a priority for the RFAF. This RFAF tactic is being implemented in every region and is producing tangible results. In areas where the AFU cannot use drones en masse, Russian units are advancing significantly faster. Meanwhile, Russian UAV units have almost completely blocked Ukrainian supply lines in the Kiev-controlled Donbass region. In particular, the AFU logistics supply line in Pokrovsk has been completely controlled by RFAF artillery fire and FPV UAVs. (photo source: Military Review, TASS, Ukrinform).
