Implementing the goal of transforming the economic structure towards increasing the proportion of goods and services in ethnic minority areas according to (Project 3) in the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the period 2021-2030, Son La province has transformed the economic structure, applied science and technology to improve productivity. The whole province of Son La currently has 48 honey beekeeping associations, with more than 2,100 members; there are 7 cooperatives, honey production and trading establishments. Honey beekeeping households have applied the method of beekeeping in the next box (ie from the main bee box, add another layer).
This method has many advantages over traditional single-box beekeeping. Because bee colonies grow quickly in the next box, honey yields are high; water content is below 20%. When harvesting honey, the beekeeper only needs to remove the nests on the next floor without affecting the queen bee's egg-laying activities and the worker bee's larvae rearing activities on the ground floor. Thanks to that, honey is more delicious than the traditional beekeeping method.
In 2014, Son La honey was granted a Collective Trademark Certificate by the Department of Intellectual Property; in 2019, honey products of a number of production facilities and farming households were recognized as OCOP products with 3 stars or more.
